The role holder is a senior member of the Group Underwriting Management function and will work under the direction of the Group Underwriting Controls Manager.

The role will help embed MS Amlin’s underwriting culture, standards and philosophy across MS AUL, ensuring that each of the SBUs is operating in accordance with these principles.

The successful candidate will be expected to manage a team to assist with the production and management of MS Amlin’s Underwriting Control Framework.

This includes assisting with the production of MS Amlin Underwriting Policies, Standards and Controls and assessing cross-

SBU compliance. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance to MS Amlin underwriting and governance, as well as all relevant regulatory controls for MS AUL.

Where areas are identified that fall below MS Amlin’s expectations and / or where underwriting performance falls below the level expected this role will be expected to challenge and help SBUs put in place plans to remediate.

3. Key Result Areas .

Underwriting Management Framework

  • Assist the Underwriting Controls Manager in the annual review, collation and enhancement of the Group Underwriting Management framework and agreeing it with MS Amlin’s Chief Underwriting Officer.
  • This will include contributing to the review of MS Amlin’s Underwriting Policies and Standards and ensuring they remain fit for purpose.

  • Providing assurance to the Group Underwriting Controls Manager on the extent to which MS Amlin’s Underwriting Policies and Standards are being met by MS AUL.
  • Reviewing the effectiveness of the processes and controls for each SBU to meet MS Amlin’s Underwriting Standards and recommending improvements where appropriate.
  • Where MS Amlin’s Underwriting Standards are not being met to provide guidance to SBU management on where there are shortfalls and recommendations on how to address the shortfalls.
  • Underwriting Control Oversight / Board Reporting

  • Responsible for the quarterly production of the cross SBU and Legal Entity Underwriting Control Report challenging responses and developing further as required by MS Amlin Senior Management.
  • Ensuring that cross-Underwriting Management Committee and Board regular reporting is produced and submitted to deadline.
  • MS AUL Governance Controls

  • Responsible for the running of all key governance controls for the MS AUL Legal Entity providing timely and accurate reports to management as required.
  • Ensuring that all governance and assurance controls required by MS Amlin’s Underwriting Framework and relevant regulators are established and embedded across MS AUL.
  • Production of detailed MS AUL How To’ Guides for Underwriters to follow ensuring these are fit for purpose.
  • Establishing and managing action plans to address Internal Control Framework, Audit and all other relevant governance gaps and communicating these to MS Amlin management.
  • Expert Risk Review

  • Assist the Underwriting Controls Manager to oversee a robust independent expert risk review process across MS Amlin which includes a quality panel of reviews and a clear process map.
  • Report all key findings and outcomes to subsidiary and MS Amlin Group Audit Committees.
  • 4. The Operating Environment and Context of the Job

    MS Amlin operates within highly regulated business environment which requires that the underwriting units are appropriately monitored and that consistent standards are met.

    MS Amlin intends that each SBU is capable of managing itself, in accordance with the agreed underwriting standards and philosophy and within a clear control framework, however the Group Underwriting Management function sets the framework and ensures that it is being adhered to.

    SBUs have been delegated underwriting responsibilities from MS Amlin’s Legal Entities however the Group Underwriting Management Function acts as a key business partner in ensuring targets set are appropriate and sufficient oversight and challenge exists.

    5. Key Competencies : Generic

    Industry experience

    Minimum of 5 years of experience in an insurance or reinsurance environment. Preferably with exposure to Underwriting Controls or Compliance

    Demonstrate a clear understanding and knowledge of the Lloyd’s insurance market

    Understands and applies the appropriate legal principles and procedures

    Management Experience

    Experience managing others in a similar role is preferable.

    7. Key Interfaces :

    The role will involve interaction with the SBU’s and primarily with Underwriters and Underwriting Managers. Additionally it is important that there is good interaction and excellent communication with MS Amlin Risk, Legal, Compliance, Internal Audit and other Functions as necessary.
