What you’ll do :
At Elsevier we’re converging towards an Infrastructure Platform that can be used by teams across the organisation. The Infrastructure Platform Director role is responsible for establishing the centralised teams to support the Platform, managing the overall Platform roadmap and coordinating with teams as they migrate to the Platform.
You will combine software and product thinking to build and run Elsevier’s large-scale, distributed and fault-tolerant systems within agreed reliability objectives whilst enabling the fast flow of feature and service updates.
Initially the role will focus on three key objectives : establishing a Platform Engineering and Operations function, creation of an internal Platform-as-a-Service, and on-boarding products onto the Platform.
Our goal is to have 80% of Elsevier’s workloads on the Platform by 2025.
Our internal customers span Product, Development and Engineering teams across Elsevier, whether they are building or supporting clients, backend services, libraries, data pipelines or machine learning models.
The Infrastructure Platform is a foundation of self-service APIs, tools, services, knowledge and support arranged as an internal product.
Autonomous delivery teams can make use of the Platform to deliver quality software to customers easily, at a higher pace, without the need for specialist infrastructure knowledge.
Who you are :
You will have real world experience of global of engineering and operations. You are fanatical about developing software systems to solve complex problems and enabling engineering teams to be more productive.
You understand the challenges involved in delivering and supporting products at a global scale and can demonstrate business and technical agility and dexterity in managing complex situations.
You will be able to powerfully communicate the technical vision of how the Infrastructure Platform will benefit Elsevier and are able to promote concepts, principles and nomenclature across all levels of the organisation.
The Infrastructure Platform is based on a self-service model, where teams can request infrastructure components and have them automatically provisioned.
Therefore, you understand Product and Service Management practices, and why it’s important we treat the Platform as a Product’ ensuring stakeholder agreement on striking a balance between new features, reliability and cost.
You have experience in building and maintaining infrastructure platforms that offer choice and frees Product Development teams to get up and running quickly and focus more time on delivering features to our customers.
You understand the benefits of microservices architectures and cloud native technologies and will promote the paved road’ as the foundation for product development.
You will curate and maintain a healthy innersource software development model, ensuring collaboration, transparency and active participation across Elsevier Technology.
You have a passion for building high performing teams comprised of software and system engineers. You lead by example, care personally for your team, and establish credibility with the quality of your own and your team's technical execution, personal development and minimising operational overload.
You have expertise gained from working within an agile software development environment. You have experience in coaching and mentoring teams in software development best practices.
You are able to work with the wider technology team to create and optimise an operating model that results in clarity, engaged teams and fast-flow of change.
Experience in managing 24x7 operational support teams, through a balanced on-call rota across continents, always ensuring engineers have sufficient training and onboarding.
You have experience in managing budgets and internal recharge models. You are proficient in cost optimisation and consumption models of cloud resources.
Increased Product Owner and Developer Experience measured through CSAT and a reduction in Sprint Zero times. Increased Platform adoption by Product teams.
Measured by KPI’s such as Lead Time for Changes, Deployment Frequency, Change Failure Rate, Time to Restore Service (MTTR).
Reduction of security and audit actions as a result of the using the Platform.
Speeding up our Security and Infrastructure Architecture approval processes, by pre-approving the commodity components.
Through a common Infrastructure Platform and Tools we are able to reduce toil and focus efforts on higher value projects like Chaos Engineering.
Computer Science or Software Engineering background strongly preferred.
Proven Product Management and Service Management skills. Able to confidently present to senior stakeholders from across the business.
Ability to think strategically and craft a compelling product vision.
Experience building and leading technical teams with a strong background on SRE or DevOps engineering disciplines and principles.
You have a get-stuff-done attitude, have great positive energy and can make an impact through cross-functional leadership.
Experience supporting infrastructure and services in public cloud environments (AWS, Azure).
Experience in cloud native technologies and supporting containerised application technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
Proficient in building, designing and maintaining RESTful APIs, including security and rate limiting.
Good understanding of how monitoring tools and observability can help with determining the root cause of customer impacting performance issues.
High-cadence software deployment and CI / CD pipeline automation using tools like Spinnaker or Jenkins.
