The Role :
As Principal Engineer, you will oversee and take accountability for the end-to-end Systems Engineering lifecycle across complex, high-
power, high-voltage, hybrid & full electric projects. You will provide strong technical leadership from eliciting user / product needs, requirements capture / management, through to test & verification planning.
You will be responsible for the architecture of powertrain and / or battery solutions and will curate the technology roadmap, keeping the business at the forefront of industry trends as well as providing technical leadership and contributing to the planning and implementation of projects, bids and proposals.
You will champion Systems Engineering best practice in McLaren Applied Technologies and work closely with the Head of Systems Engineering to continuously improve the practice and processes.
Developing and delivering complex hybrid or full electric powertrain and high-power, high-voltage battery systems on multi-
year projects with significant risk factors, such as delivery challenges, challenging stakeholders or new technologies. Leads in solution architecting across multidisciplinary teams and ensures deliverables are on target to meet long-term business goals.
Working concurrently on several projects across the company to provide guidance and direction to other Systems Engineers.
Find and utilise the right technologies, managing significant risk and taking responsibility for technical / architectural decisions and processes.
Directing time ensuring optimal use of skills and experience in providing most value to the business.
Be recognised as expert in own function within the organisation.
Assessesing new products, clients and markets, alongside Chief Engineers, representing the company externally in a thought leadership capacity.
Defining technology based critical success factors, provides high-level direction and significant input to proposals.
Leading research from a basic concept through to a feasibility proof. Leads development into new technical areas, generating IP as appropriate.
Interprets internal / external business issues and recommends solutions / best practices. Introduces radical improvements to business processes, where appropriate.
Leading disruptive change to a positive outcome, using sound engineering principles; thinks outside of the box.
Contributing to policy on safety issues and champions safe working practices.
Planning and executing adoption of new techniques across the business and disseminates knowledge.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience :
First class degree or upper 2nd in Engineering, Electronics, Physics, or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience).
Regarded as an expert, delivering high standards of Systems Engineering on complex multidisciplinary systems with hardware, embedded software, application software and mechanical components
Demonstrable experience in developing and implementation of battery or high voltage automotive / motorsport systems. Battery pack design (thermal / electrical / mechanical / energy management).
Demonstrable experience in developing powertrains for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV).
A proven background in high pressured, time critical customer facing Systems Engineering roles.
Strong background in requirements capture and management processes.
Strong background in testing & validation of distributed electronic and software systems.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent technical knowledge. Able to quickly build rapport with peers and stakeholders.
Able to tactfully challenge without alienating.
Strong analytical and numerical skills.
Experience with requirements management tools e.g. Siemens Polarion, Siemens Teamcenter, IBM DOORS, HP ALM etc.
Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using SysML / UML.
Experience of ISO 26262 for functional safety of road vehicles would be advantageous
Familiar with development and integration of Battery Management Systems (BMS).
