The Role :
The role of offers the opportunity to havecore involvement in a broad range of engineering projects, across all Applied Technologies business units.
You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, sometimes taking the role of technical lead, or mechanical engineering discipline lead.
There will be some focus on hybrid and electric drive projects, delivering mechanical designs for battery packaging, thermal management, and structural performance of electric vehicle power systems.
You willl learn and develop knowledge, skills and expertise by working alongside experts in their fields. Tools, guidance and mentorship will be provided to enable full responsibility for career progression, supported by IMechE and IET frameworks
Some domestic or international travel may be required from time to time. Standard working hours, 40-hour week, Monday to Friday, but flexibility to work additional hours if required.
Delivery of mechanical design concepts, detailed designs and functional prototypes on projects across Motorsport, Automotive, Health, and Public Transport.
Primary focus initially will be on the mechanical design of electric and hybrid vehicle systems.
Active participation in customer meetings, brainstorms and workshops to discover and form technical project opportunities.
Support project planning, produce project proposals, technical specifications, and other design and engineering documentation to a high standard.
Engineering design analysis and development using thermal and structural analysis tools.
Share, present and discuss concept designs collaboratively with peers, internal project teams, external customer engineering teams, and other key stakeholders.
Client-facing, often being the main point of contact for engineering development.
Work closely with multi-disciplinary engineering groups across Applied Technologies and other McLaren group businesses.
Drive own career development proactively, identifying training opportunities and tool enhancements.
Provide input into team strategy discussions, taking a shared ownership of the team’s growth and capability development.
Skills and Experience :
Experienced in thermal cooling analysis, ideally using Siemens FloEFD, in the context of electronics and electric vehicle systems.
Some knowledge of structural finite element analysis, ideally using Altair Hyperworks Suite, for the design of battery packages in harsh vibration and impact shock environments.
Proficient in 3D CAD solid modelling with some Class A surface modelling competency, ideally using Siemens NX and Teamcenter PDM system.
Familiar with BS8888 : 2011, or equivalent, for the generation and checking of engineering drawings.
History of working on automotive and / or motorsport projects would be preferred.
An understanding of the requirements of creepage and clearance in high voltage systems would be preferred.
Experience of working with global brands, their design teams and being the customer’s technical point of contact.
Proven responsibility across the entire design lifecycle from initial project scoping with external customers through to volume manufacture and production support.
Skilled at writing design documentation to a high standard, with the ability to deliver impactful presentations with confidence to internal and external audiences.
Comfortable with multi-tasking and adapting to changing project requirements.
Adept at researching, understanding and implementing technical solution methods when beyond current skill set.
Minimum BEng Mechanical Engineering degree, or equivalent technical degree, ideally with an Engineering Chartership accreditation.
