Job Title : Senior Lenders E&S Advisory Consultant

Location : London

We have an exciting opportunity for an aspiring individual to join our expanding Lenders Environmental and Social Advisory team.

We have an established reputation amongst International Financial Institutions (IFIs), Export Credit Agencies and Commercial Lenders for advising on socially and environmentally challenging and complex infrastructure projects.

We have numerous ongoing high-profile assignments in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central / Western Asia and have strong growth aspirations.

You will support the promotion and delivery of Lenders’ environmental and social advisory commissions, including environmental and social due diligence and Lenders monitoring assignments for internationally high-profile infrastructure projects.

You will have the opportunity to travel to observe the environmental, health, safety and social impacts and risks of Projects, visit and engage with project developers, contractors, lenders and other key stakeholders and help ensure the delivery of good international practice in environmental and social management.

In addition, and as part of an enthusiastic and ambitious team, you will collaborate with colleagues across all Arup regions to contribute to the growth of our business.

This includes sharing your ideas and contributing to innovation and research in new products and services that aim to shape a sustainable future.

Role : You will :

You will :

  • Report to a Principal Environmental and Social and ultimately the Associate Director responsible for our Lenders Environmental and Social Advisory services.
  • Coordinate and manage E&S advisory services for lender-financed projects and deliver in particular the EHS aspects of these including on the development and implementation of environmental, community health and safety and occupational health and safety impact and opportunity assessments, risk assessments, management systems, plans, procedures, work method statements, permit to work systems (and similar) for all project phases;
  • and emergency preparedness and response planning.

  • Undertake regular short-term travel to project sites overseas.
  • Contribute to and deliver Gap Analysis Reports, Environmental and Social Due Diligence Reports, Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAP), Sustainability Appraisals, ESG Reports and Environmental and Social Monitoring Reports, amongst others.
  • Contribute to business development activities including proposals, presentations, and marketing activities.
  • Actively participate in and represent Arup at external meetings with clients and partners.
  • Contribute to thought leadership, innovation and research.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with external clients, and colleagues within Arup.
  • Work independently with limited supervision.
  • Requirements :

    The successful candidate will have :

  • A degree or post graduate degree in an environment, health and safety or sustainability related science.
  • Professional experience :
  • o applying IFI environmental and social policies and standards (e.g IFC / World Bank, EBRD, ADB, IADB, AfDB, Equator Principles etc) to infrastructure projects in a developing country context, through gap analyses, ESDD, performance monitoring and assurance etc.

    And / Or :

    o working in a major construction EHS site management or supervision role in a UK or similarly highly regulated or monitored context.

  • o delivering EHS inspection and audit reports, supporting and tracking closure of non-compliances and corrective actions;
  • o developing, analysing trends in and reporting against EHS leading and lagging KPIs to board / lenders / other non-EHS specialists;
  • o undertaking EHS incident investigation including root cause analysis and identification of preventative actions

    o advising on natural resource use, site pollution prevention and control, GHG reduction and waste management.

    o designing, advising on and / or implementing behavioural-based safety management systems and monitoring and reporting performance thereof

    o working collaboratively with colleagues, collaborators and clients across multiple technical disciplines.

    One of more of the following :

    o OHSAS18001 / ISO45001 lead auditor certification (or equivalent)

    o NEBOSH certification (or equivalent) : National or International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety / Health and Safety Management for Construction (National or International)

    o ISO14001 lead auditor certification (or equivalent)

  • Recognised professional profile (e.g. chartership) with a relevant Professional Body or organization, or at least to have well advanced application for this.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills to diverse stakeholder audiences from individual discipline technical specialists to senior projects leadership, community members and lenders / investors.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to plan and manage self and others deliver multiple work streams within small to medium scale projects, including checking the work produced by others.
  • Passion for delivering a sustainable future and for continual improvement of both self and the team.
  • In addition, candidates with the following will have a distinct advantage :

  • Professional experience working in a construction EHS site management or supervision role on projects in countries and / or with workers from countries where EHS standards (or their enforcement) are less well-regulated or enforced than the UK (or equivalent).
  • Applying systems thinking to sustainability challenges in the infrastructure context
  • Advising on circular economy, net zero carbon, biodiversity net gain and / or social value.
  • Experience in working on major transport, renewable energy and / or power infrastructure projects.
  • Experience of supervising the tasks of more junior staff
  • Ability to work in one or more foreign languages (e.g. French, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin).
