Role Description

Sellafield Ltd has opportunities for Human Factors Specialists to join our team working on some of the most complex, technical engineering challenges in the UK.

Human Factors specialists provide professional advice and support to Programmes, Projects and Operating Units across the business enabling the accelerated delivery of the Sellafield mission.

The roles will be technically demanding, and are based either at our site in West Cumbria, which covers 6 square kilometres and is home to more than 200 nuclear facilities and the largest inventory of untreated nuclear waste in the world, or our offices near Warrington in the North of England.


The Human Factors Specialist is responsible for the provision of HF assessment and advice for use in Safety Case, Design Engineering, Commissioning and Operations contexts.

The assessment and advice should be delivered in a fit for purpose, proportionate manner which achieves company safety standards and quality arrangements.

The Human Factors specialist should proactively seek and implement improvements and share learning.

  • Identify and deliver a proportionate scope of Human Factors activities for all types of design and / or safety case projects or modifications across site.
  • Apply psychological and ergonomic theory to determine and apply appropriate Human Factors activities, methods and compile arguments and evidence in support of;
  • Safety Case
  • Design of user interfaces, equipment, workspaces and environments
  • Operations
  • Manage own time and work, delivering to time and schedule including immediate / urgent unplanned requests.
  • Communicating Human Factors findings and advice to relevant parties and stakeholders.
  • Carry out quality assurance activities.
  • Essential and Desirable Skills

    Essential Qualifications

  • BSc (min 2 : 1) or MSc in relevant degree(e.g. Ergonomics or Psychology) or equivalent.
  • Maths and / or science A-level or equivalent.
  • Essential Skills

  • Demonstrable experience applying Human Factors principles in high hazard industries e.g. nuclear, oil, gas, chemical etc.
  • Human error modelling for safety cases (both quantitative and qualitative)
  • Safety critical task analysis, design and optimisation
  • Provision of Human Factors support into design projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly personable with experience dealing with individuals at all levels of an organisation
  • Time management, including dealing with and prioritising immediate / urgent unplanned requests.
  • Desirable Skills

  • Understanding of Nuclear Safety Case, Projects, Design Engineering and Commissioning processes and methods.
  • Understanding of UK regulatory environment and relevant legislation HASWA, Management of H&S at Work Regulations, Nuclear Installations Act, IRR.
  • Ability to work with internal and external stakeholders and regulators.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Sellafield Ltd site, the hazards posed, organisational structure, and processes.
