In the last year alone we have :

  • Worked on corporate transactions valued at over £3 billion
  • Advised our developer and social housing clients on over £1.6 billion of residential sales and over £1 billion of refinancings
  • Advised on HS2 which will see the development of over 330 miles of railway network with an expected £59 billion benefit to the wider economy
  • As if that wasn’t enough, we are also involved in the transformation of Battersea Power Station and act for the majority of London’s major Housing Associations who together own assets of over £17.3 billion.
  • However it’s not all about big numbers and high-profile projects; the real success of our business comes from the ability of our teams to provide fantastic service and create long-lasting relationships.

    The role

Although the successful candidate will join us as a member of the team, the role will primarily (around 85%) be to support the work which Colette and Lindsay lead on as well as to give support to Tim’s development risk practice.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to take on early responsibility for delivering their own matters and to have a high degree of client contact, whilst being supervised by more senior members of the team.

The team work across the client base and we will ensure that any new member to the team has the opportunity to work with as many different clients as possible so that they gain the broadest possible experience with the client base whilst building on their own experience to date.

The team undertakes a broad range of business development initiatives to support the growth of the practice. This will be a particularly interesting and intellectually challenging time to be a member of one of the Country’s foremost planning teams as the Government is proposing radical changes in its White Paper as well and practical measures to secure increased delivery of housing and infrastructure in the wake of COVID-19 in an attempt to kickstart the economy.

We will be keen to involve our new team member in these important activities and we have a proven track record of encouraging our junior lawyers to start their own networks.

    The team

The team comprises 3 partners (Colette, Tim and Lindsay), two senior associates (Jo and Matt), an associate (Alex) 2 solicitors (Elly and Alice) and a trainee.

Colette leads the team as Head of Department. Colette and Jo are based in Manchester with the remainder of the team based in London.

We are supported by 3 excellent secretaries - Kuljit, Nicky and Julie. The ethos of the team is for every member of it to work hard to deliver for the clients but to have fun whilst doing so.

We act primarily for major residential developers, registered providers, local planning authorities and landowners. We have a national reputation for high level strategic planning advice on major residential led schemes which forms the core work of the team led by Colette, Lindsay and Jo, as demonstrated by the team being awarded Planning Law Firm of the year 2020 and shortlisted for the same award in 2021.

We are also in regular demand to provide specialist planning input on projects being handled elsewhere in the firm.

The core planning work is complemented by Tim’s growing development risk practice which focuses on rights of light, neighbourly matters, general developer disputes, planning litigation and planning enforcement.

By its very nature there is a large degree of overlap between Tim’s area of practice and the core planning work with regular joint working across the team.

    Candidate specification

The role in will suit a candidate who is enthusiastic, flexible, willing to work hard and enjoy working in a team environment.

Given the work of the team, the successful candidate will be expected to have a good grounding in planning law as well as experience in drafting s106 / 278 agreements and, also, in the first year, to grasp the basics of development risk work.

Regular training will be provided to support this and to enable our new team member to work confidently on all areas of the team’s work.
