South Essex College is the largest provider of technical and vocational education and training for 16-18 year olds, adults and apprenticeship provision within Essex and we are growing! We have a position available for an all-round workshop engineer / Toolmaker to join a well-established college.

This role will require the successful manual machinist / workshop engineer to teach manual milling / turning / grinding and also be willing to work across the engineering department when needed.

The Advanced Machine Tool Instructor is energetic, entrepreneurial, and experienced in machining, using both lathes and Mills and CNC machines (desirable).

The successful candidate will provide lecture and workshop instruction in the Completion for Machine Tool Technology programs as well as any additional certificate programs that are developed, and they will collaborate with machine tool and other tech faculty on curriculum development, programming, and maintenance of equipment.

The Instructor will actively work with industry to ensure that students are prepared with appropriate machining skills and knowledge and will support collaborations with industry.

The instructor will work closely with faculty in our College program and with instructors working in concurrent enrolment programs.

The instructor will be team-oriented with demonstrated skills to engage students in the machining discipline. They will be able to communicate effectively to promote excellence within the academic program.

Our instructors are expected to engage in learner-centred teaching methods, collaborate positively with colleagues, and otherwise contribute to the collegial and good-humoured environment of the campus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required by the Position : The successful applicant must have relevant experience in milling and turning.

  • Capable of teaching a variety of machine tooling related classes.
  • Commitment to the college mission and technical education.

  • Ability to engage students in the classroom, workshop, and Online using teams or other Learning management software.
  • Good computer skills and familiar with Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Disposition : Readiness to respond to local industry needs
  • Demonstrated knowledge and abilities in teaching Lathes and Mills
  • Desirable knowledge of CAD and CNC machining
