Job Summary

As a member of our Casualty Team working under the Litigation Management Unit, you will work closely with Aviva Trial Lawyers and approved External Legal Firms to ensure that all protocols and procedures are executed.

You will provide input and assistance with the strategic direction of all claims handled within the DAP Program. The position requires a self-

starter and autonomous worker who will represent Aviva on all DAP mediations and some pre-trials. The ability to communicate and persuasively drive change is a key skill requirement.

Travel outside of the Greater Toronto Area will include, Hamilton, Ottawa, London, Windsor, Northern Ontario, Atlantic and Western Canada.

Job Responsibilities : What would I do on the job?

  • Review and approve counsel’s strategy documents and DAP requests
  • Obtain updates from counsel when required (such as when requests come in from insureds, brokers, or from a Claims Relationship Manager)
  • Update Claim Center as required and ensure file data is accurate.
  • Help develop strategies and protocols that will influence and change behaviour and overall improvements in litigation claim handling and management by external counsel.
  • Champion new ways of thinking that challenge historic behaviour.
  • Help reduce adverse reserve development.
  • Monitor and manage indemnity spend.
  • Control legal expenses and analyze value added.
  • Manage compliance to protocols and strategies surrounding Aviva’s various defensible programs to deliver planned results and to influence change behaviour.
  • Uses well- reasoned arguments to support our position and achieve buy-in.

  • Work closely with and attend at mediations with our legal partners on delegated authority program files to ensure a consistent approach and message is delivered.
  • The successful candidate will be heavily involved with Aviva’s various Defensible Programs, and drive a consistent message with judges, mediators, and counsel surrounding our Litigation files.

    Experience / Skills required : Do I have what it takes?

  • Strong grounding in technical legal issues, particularly Ontario Auto and litigation process
  • 5-7 years in a claims technical roles
  • CIP / FCIP Designation an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to develop case strategy with legal counsel to promote resolution
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to gather and digest a large amount of information in a short period of time and present in an effective manner for the purpose of influencing the final outcome.
  • Proven experience dealing directly with plaintiffs and plaintiff counsel
  • Excellent analytical and decision making abilities
  • Proven experience to represent Aviva at settlement meetings and mediations by taking a lead role in the proceedings
  • Solid PC skills
  • Some Provinces require adjusters to be licenced, therefore Aviva will work with the successful candidate to ensure they are appropriately licenced and able to work in all regions.
