Description and Responsibilities

Are you a Registered Nurse looking for an environment that is not an office or hospital setting? Are you looking for the ability to make connections with your patients and work within an innovative and person-centered domain?

Open Sky offers options for nurses that are beyond the four walls of an institutional setting. Open Sky nurses work within residential or community settings with a focus on recovery based care for people diagnosed with a mental illness, developmental or intellectual disability, physical disability, acquired brain injury and / or substance use disorder.

Work days can be a challenge at times, however, with a pace slower than a hospital setting and working with people on a long-term basis allows for a unique opportunity for a nurse who is looking for a clinically based, supportive and nurturing role.

  • Monitor residents and address and mitigate any adverse physiological or psychiatric effects from changes in medication administered while in the program.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with medication and providing support to residents regarding medications including answering questions, discussing issues, and empowering residents in establishing and maintaining routines
  • Collaborate with the staff team to complete a thorough physical assessment of health needs; provide referral to appropriate community physicians / health care providers as needed.
  • Provide training and consultation to programs regarding medical issues, procedures and techniques, and health and wellness practices.
  • Ensure effective implementation of Nursing / Health Care Plans through staff training, evaluation, and modification when needed.
  • Review clinical records on a regular basis to ensure adequate services and supports are provided, including any applicable medical interventions, tests, or preventative care as necessary.
  • Cultivate ongoing relationship with other health care providers to provide consistency in prescribed treatment procedures, techniques, etc.
  • including follow-up or ongoing care following a hospitalization as needed.

  • Participate in the monitoring and corrective action activities of the agency’s Health and Safety Committee.
  • Attend, participate in, or facilitate meetings / trainings and supervisions as assigned.
  • Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse licensed in Massachusetts.
  • Experience with adults with mental health and substance use disorders preferred.
  • Excellent assessment, documentation, and verbal communication skills required.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
