Position Description : Purpose of role :

Purpose of role :

The candidate will work as a member of the Application Infrastructure Support Team and will be a point of contact with regards to all scheduled processing (both in production and test environments) including intra-

day and overnight batches, messaging to third parties, automated file transfers, data loading and processing for various data warehouses, reporting services and applications.

The team is also responsible for the day to day support of SharePoint and Qlikview.

Role accountabilities :

Prioritise issue resolution based on business risk

Strive to devise and develop solutions appropriate to the urgency of the problem. Develop permanent solutions at every opportunity.

Ensure that issues are owned from notification to closure. This is particularly applicable for issues where there is a limited contribution to make to the solution.

Ensure there is regular face to face contact with users (predominantly IT users)

Undertake small scale development tasks

Participate in and initiate relevant meetings.

Ensure that IT Operations’ documented procedures are followed.

Knowledge and skills required :


Self-starter with the confidence to asses, identify and deploy resolutions in time critical scenario’s.

Good technical and business application knowledge, an understanding of automated processes, how they integrate / interface with others application, the infrastructure and / or desktop environment on which they are hosted and how they are used by the business.

Ability to pick up such knowledge rapidly.

Good working knowledge of industry standard change management procedures. This includes an understanding of business requirements and ability to influence IT and business colleagues accordingly to manage the risks associated with implementing change.

Excellent people management skills, particularly communication.

Ability to work under pressure and at all times remain professional.

Role requires participation in an overnight on-call rota as such any successful candidate would require the ability to make decisions independently and escalate if necessary overnight.


Use a systematic approach to a complex problem or situation, approaches it from different angles.

Can understand advice given from technical specialists and assess the impact in relation to actual requirements.

Is able to work with incomplete information and to determine dependencies and constraints, likely to be of a highly technical nature.

Understands the conflicting and changing business requirements and factors these into planning.

Leads the selection of scenarios considered to aid decision-making.

Written Communication

Is able to articulate technical matters to a non-technical audience in a concise and clear manner.

Is able to summarise status on issues or progress against planned items of work so that the key message is easily and quickly understood.

Technical Skills

Must have strong SQL skills as small scale development and bug fixing is essential to the role. Control M knowledge or knowledge of other scheduling tools is preferable.

Other application sets like Cadis, Reporting Services 2008, IBM MQ Series v6.0 and Qlikview would be advantageous but not essential.
