The Role

You will be based at Newcastle University Business School and will be involved in empirical finance research projects.

The work to be undertaken requires very good knowledge of empirical finance literature, especially in the area of asset pricing.

You should also have experience in conducting empirical research in finance using appropriate programming languages and / or software packages, and excellent writing and communication skills.

You should ideally have a PhD in a related area (essential for Research Associates), or have prior research experience and a Masters degree in the relevant area with a dissertation component.

As part of your application, you are required to upload an example of a written sample which contains quantitative analysis / results.

This position is full time and is fixed term for a period of 6 months.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conducting and writing a literature review, in an organised manner and with minimum supervision.
  • Gathering and organising data, as appropriate, from a number of providers such as WRDS, CRSP, Compustat, etc.
  • Analysing financial and related data using an appropriate software package / programming language (e.g., Stata, Eviews / GAUSS, MATLAB, Python, or similar as appropriate for tasks at hand).
  • Assisting with the presentation and writing of findings in appropriate formats.
  • Undertaking other research tasks as and when required, by liaising with key stakeholders.

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the academic literature in empirical finance at a level appropriate for the project at hand.
  • Ability to assess and evaluate concepts / theories and develop original solutions.
  • Good working knowledge of quantitative methods and data management.
  • High level analytical and problem solving capability.
  • Ability to communicate complex information with clarity.
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a team.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of and research background in quantitative data analysis in a software package / programming language relevant for this area of research (Stata, Eviews / GAUSS, MATLAB, Python).
  • Qualifications

  • Completed PhD (essential for appointment at Associate level), or have prior research experience and a Masters degree in the relevant area (Finance or closely related) with a dissertation component.
  • MSc and BSc in the field of Finance (or closely related).
