The Role

The Linux Systems Team Lead is responsible for a leading a small team of Engineers to manage a unique and diverse portfolio of Linux based Cloud and Hosting systems, platforms and services.

This is a challenging and dynamic role, which will push your technical skills to the limit.

Apache, NGINX, MySQL, Openshift, Ceph, CentOS, NGINX, KVM, Dovecot, Roundcube, to name but a few of the many technologies we use, delivering over 1 million services across multiple different platforms, not just to the UK but also with a global scope.

This is a huge opportunity to enhance and develop your technical skills, whilst undertaking industry qualifications (such as RHCA etc.)

You will be an advocate for Linux and Open Source technologies and come to be a significant voice in the wider group TechOps team.

You will be work closely with local teams and colleagues across Europe overseeing security, performance, resilience and BAU operations of your platforms, whilst contributing to the overall strategic plan for the UK Linux Team and the business.

You will assist with planning the platform roadmap, technology direction and approach. This is a period of significant investment and transformation in our technology and, day-to-day business aside, there is also a small’ project to migrate our current datacentre services by the end of 2022 (10,000 physical servers, 50+ platforms) - providing huge scope for modernisation and renovation.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Set the strategic and technical direction for the Linux platforms
  • Providing application design and review for development teams
  • Lead and mentor a team of 4 Linux System Engineers
  • Work within a larger virtual Linux Engineering Team
  • Maintain and develop your hand-on technical skills, contribute to hands on Operations and Engineering as needed.
  • Be an advocate for Linux technology
  • Work in a matrix with the UK Engineering Teams to improve, design platforms, services and infrastructure solutions
  • Manage the workload and priorities of a team of Linux Systems Engineers
  • Act as a technical escalation point to manage incidents and issues
  • Provide mechanisms and process to the IT Operations teams to enable them to effectively manage and monitor the performance, capacity and availability of the infrastructure and services
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting to group standards
  • You will ensure that engineers’ tasks and workloads are prioritised to ensure that operational BAU work dovetails closely with continuous improvement project work
  • You will contribute to business cases and reporting as needed
  • Skills and experience

  • Expert in Linux servers administration architecture (Red Hat CentOS)
  • Experience in Linux scripting languages
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining services such as Apache, MySQL, NGINX, etc.
  • Experience in configuration management tools, such as Puppet and Chef
  • Experience in leading a Team or desire to lead mentor a team
