Head of Project Services Global Engineering

Location Macclesfield UK or Sodertalje Sweden

Reports to the Vice President of Global Engineering & Real Estate with responsibility for a global function. Responsible for delivering capabilities and solutions for capital project cost estimating, planning & scheduling, project controls, cashflow management, contract management, benchmarking, information management, and compliance.

The role is also responsible for departmental headcount and budget management. Development and leadership of a high performing global team is critical.

This role is a manager of staff and contract resources but also requires deep domain expertise. As a member of the Global Engineering Leadership Team the role also influences heavily the strategic direction of Global Engineering and Real Estate, has multiple senior level partner relationships and interactions while also engaging at the project level through regular project site visits.

Global Engineering and Real Estate team has its main hubs in the U.K., U.S. and Sweden, they also have a presence in Asia Pacific and France.

Combining the use of the newest technologies, skilled programme management and a broad range of engineering and construction expertise, the team establishes positive relationships with end customers to build facilities which match requirements and exceed expectations.

The role :

Head of Project Services

Reports to the Vice President of Global Engineering & Real Estate with responsibility for a global function. Responsible for delivering capabilities and solutions for capital project cost estimating, planning & scheduling, project controls, cashflow management, contract management, benchmarking, information management, and compliance.

The role is also responsible for departmental headcount and budget management. Development and leadership of a high performing global team is critical.

This role is a manager of staff and contract resources but also requires deep subject matter expertise. Will also be encouraged to mentor employees across the business and in Global Engineering and Real Estate.

The key responsibilities and activities of the role include :

  • Lead and develop team to deliver credible work processes and results related to Estimating, Planning and Scheduling, and Project Control for large capital projects.
  • Build capability and staff on a global level to support current work, future growth, and long-term needs of the enterprise.

  • Serve as member of the Global Engineering & Real Estate (GERE) Leadership team. Provide support and ownership of the GERE function, leading initiatives and delivering results that are multi-functional and impact the broader business.
  • Develop, maintain and evolve the strategy for delivery of all services and capabilities. Actively develop and maintain relationships with key partners.
  • Responsible for establishment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the business processes related to all areas of remit including guidelines, procedures, tools, and training documents.
  • Ensure coordination and alignment with the AstraZeneca project delivery process.

  • Responsible for development of cost estimates & schedules for all stages of project delivery.
  • Support development and lead implementation of an integrated project control approach for projects, using Architect / Engineer and Construction Management efforts considering contracting strategy and team structure.
  • Responsible for effective project control execution for all projects including :
  • Integrated cost management
  • Execution of project commercial and financial control functions
  • Implementation of risk management processes for cost & schedule
  • Development and management of integrated project schedules
  • Implementation of the earned value / physical progress measurement systems
  • Developing accurate high-level and detailed project cash-flow forecasts
  • Implementation of change management and cost trending
  • Deliver benchmarking process including proactive collection of data to support cost estimate and schedule preparation.
  • Ensure process for retention of project cost and schedule data and active analysis of data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.

    Create and be a great partner with external parties to support this effort.

  • Lead and execute the process for departmental headcount and budget management. Ensure systems are in place for cost recovery and that internal budgets are achieved.
  • Deliver other Business Operations requirements including oversight of key systems used for purchasing, project accounting, and invoicing.

  • Lead the process for Compliance and Anti-Bribery / Anti-Corruption across the global function.
  • Actively drive the development and delivery of training for the engineering network in good practices related to Project Control
  • Demonstrate enterprise level thought processes to provide full benefit to AZ of project control services. Identify and implement project control services outside of capital projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement activities
  • Ensure that all cost / schedule control and commercial activities stay in sync with corporate capital governance requirements and internal guidelines.
  • Participate and provide leadership in pharma industry or project control forums and conferences. Create and lead efforts for learning, sharing and other benefits.
  • Recruit, train and oversee internal resources. Identify and establish relationships with appropriate external resources to efficiently deliver the business requirements.
  • Develop lessons learned and share information to benefit future projects
  • Essential Requirements

  • Validated experience in a Project Cost Control, Engineering Project or Program leadership experience
  • Professional background, knowledge and experience in all aspects of Project Cost Control
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies for sustainable and scalable business processes
