    Thales UK has an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Acoustic Engineer Team in Templecombe this role will be one of or growing business units, Maritime Mission Systems (MMS).

    You will be engaging in the design, development, manufacture and test of acoustic transducers and Sonar hardware within the Thales MMS Acoustics Team.

    Acoustic Engineers are involved throughout the product engineering lifecycle, from research and initial design concepts through to supporting production and in-service product support.

    Responsibilities will include working on novel research programmes to develop the next generation of sensing technologies, transduction materials and enhanced measurement techniques.

    This role would suit a Graduate ready to complete their studies in 2019, looking to kick start their career, or individuals with foundational experience in a related Engineering discipline with a desire to undertake a role in Engineering.

    Key responsibilities and tasks :

  • To conduct the design and development of the underwater sensing technologies of the future.
  • Modelling, prototyping / proof of concept, acoustic testing, integration and qualification activites, design for cost / manufacture, technical reporting.
  • To conduct research on novel and low maturity sensing technologies and materials.
  • Work with our Operations teams to support the manufacture and test of deliverable hardware.
  • Support the enhancement of in-house acoustic test methods and facilities.
  • Complete activities in accordance with company procedures, safety and security regulations.
  • Actively engage in continuous personal development, working with your Team Leader to build a fulfilling career development path.
  • Skills, experience & qualifications

  • An ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and demonstrate : Good interpersonal and communication skills,Proactive can-do mentality,Logical and creative problem solving approaches.
  • Appetite for undertaking underwater acoustic hardware research, design and development activities, interfacing with others as required.
  • Interest in expanding the capabilities of Thales in-house acoustic test and prototyping facilities.
  • The holder of the role must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following : Knowledge of relevant physics (e.g. acoustics, vibration and resonant systems),Strong data analysis skills and sound mathematics,Experience in conducting basic experimental laboratory testing.
  • Working towards or holding a degree level accreditation in an appropriate engineering, maths or science discipline; e.
  • g. acoustics, physics, product design, manufacturing engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering.

    Desirable :

  • Knowledge of transducer design and development (preferably acoustic devices).
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following software; Labview, MathCad, MATLAB, COMSOL (or alternative FEA package).
  • Familiarity with prototyping basic mechanical or electrical assemblies in a prototyping environment.
  • Knowledge of underwater acoustics, transducers or other equivalent sensor topics.
  • Knowledge of transducer design and transduction materials (or similar technologies).
  • This vacancy also requires the individual to be able to obtain full Security Clearance (SC).
