Guildford

Comprising 8 Partners and Directors and around 70 staff, our Guildford office draws on a wide variety of financial and business expertise to provide a comprehensive range of accountancy and financial advisory services to both corporate and private clients.

Assurance & Business Services (ABS)

We provide a range of assurance and business services to a diverse client base ranging from small businesses and start-ups to substantial international groups.

Our portfolio of clients includes businesses with turnovers ranging from £5 million to £250 million. These include privately owned businesses in addition to companies listed on the London Stock Exchange and AIM Markets.

Purpose of role :

Provide clients with an efficient and effective service through the management of the department resources. Liaison with other departments to ensure close liaison on client affairs and assisting in administration tasks to ensure a smooth running of the department.

Key responsibilities :

  • Client Portfolio - ensure that clients receive an efficient and proactive service and client expectations are exceeded throughout the year.
  • Liaising with clients, Partners and other S&W staff where appropriate to ensure all are kept up to date with relevant issues.

  • Management and statutory accounts, including related services, and setting budgets - awareness of commercial aspects of clients’ business and impact on our work.
  • Arrangement of timetable, booking of staff, planning and completion of management accounts, statutory accounts, VAT returns and other related assignments.

  • Business / Practice Development - preparation of proposals for new work, attendance at marketing events, development of personal contacts and identification and development of opportunities for S&W with current clients.
  • New Client Take On Procedures - assist head with embedding new clients into Smith & Williamson and within the client and staff portfolio, including work schedules.
  • Department Administration - monitoring of billing / lock-up and staffing levels.
  • Training and development monitoring of staff performance, carrying out appraisals and ensuring feedback given to staff on a timely basis.
  • Ensuring appropriate in house and external training received personally.

  • Client billing attend to preparation of fee notes and fee covering letter for clients, in terms of the Business Outsourcing Services billing policy, for review by the relevant Partner.
  • Ensure WIP provisioning is kept up to date on a monthly basis as considered appropriate.

  • Review monthly and quarterly management accounts & related files prepared by members in the team.
  • Review unaudited statutory accounts & related files prepared by members in the team.
  • Review iXBRL tagged accounts once prepared by members of the team.
  • Ensure work carried out by members of your team are in accordance with the processes and procedures manuals in place for the various services.
  • Support other managers within the team with various administrative tasks and projects that arise from time to time.
  • Support Senior Manager in role and act as second in command to manage the staff teams and client portfolio, as required.
  • Key Competencies :

  • Accuracy to ensure work undertaken by staff are correct.
  • Details attention to detail is imperative for the smooth running of the work flow and portfolio.
  • Judgement - be able to assess a situation and reach a suitable conclusion based on the information available, both in terms of clients or staff.
  • Customer focus - develop relationships and gain confidence of client. Respond to client emails on a timely basis. Ensuring clients expectations are exceeded, by providing a first class service at all times.
  • Planning and organising - to ensure all client work is carried out within the appropriate timescales through continual monitoring of progression of the work.
  • This must be managed and maintained with the current tools in place.

  • Technical expertise - to ensure accounts are produced to meet statutory requirements and VAT return issues are addressed or referred to the VAT department for their input.
  • To be able to answer staff and client technical queries and make technical decisions.

  • Commercial awareness - to have a good understanding of the commercial factors affecting the client and to be able to monitor the commercial effectiveness of work done by S&W by reviewing costs against budget.
  • Teamwork - working as a team with the other managers, Partners and staff to ensure the department as a whole meets its objectives and all client demands are exceeded.
  • Problem solving - technical knowledge to resolve client issues and organisation to be flexible to meet client and Partner demands.
  • Business Development ability to develop trusted advisor status with clients.
  • Responsibility taking responsibility for the portfolio & its’ smooth running to ensure both clients and staff are happy.
  • Commitment & Reliability to have the disposition to aid the National Head of Business Outsourcing Services in growing the business and offering support to ensure no problems or issues arise along the way in embedding clients into the portfolio by going the extra mile where required.
  • Candidate Profile

    Education / Qualifications :

  • Strong academic history.
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, CA, ACCA).
  • Key Experience / Skills :

  • Significant experience of management accounts, statutory accounts and VAT returns gained within a professional services environment.
  • Experience of working with entrepreneurial, OMB and SME clients.
  • Experience of (and appetite for) business development activities such as targeting, preparation of proposal documents, proposal presentations and attendance of networking events.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of accounting standards.
  • Good working knowledge of skill requirements of staff at various levels to ensure work undertaken by appropriate individual.
  • Strong communication skills in order to liaise with clients, Directors, Partners, staff and other professionals.
  • Previous experience of management and motivation of staff to ensure best performance.
  • Strong organisation & time management skills to ensure needs of clients, partners and staff are all met.
  • Monitoring costs against budget for individual clients.
  • Proficient user of Sage, QuickBooks On-line, Xero and Microsoft Office packages or ability to get up to speed on the software, as required.
