REPORTS TO (Name and Title)


To install, maintain and test Fibre Optic Cable telecommunication cables (e.g. copper / fibre optics) across established and new networks involving external UG Duct and Overhead Networks.

Ensuring that all work is completed in a safe environment within a timely and professional manner.

2. DIMENSIONS (a) Subordinates

b) Money and Materials (ie. Turnover, Added Value, Budgets, Payrolls, etc.)

No direct subordinates but must be a good team player, reliable and supportive to colleagues and co-workers.

Whilst no individual budgets will be allocated it is essential that each Engineer’s remains accountable for their time and the materials within their direct control.

Wastage must be kept to a minimum level to ensure efficiency and financial profitability.

3. SIGNIFICANT INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS ie. Subordinates, Superior(s), other Contacts.


Lead Engineer and / or Field Supervisor

  • Day to day supervision
  • Work allocation & scheduling
  • Updates and progress feedback
  • Resolving queries
  • Absence reporting and holiday requests.
  • HSEQ Manager

  • Provide feedback / updates on the Project to enable the HSEQ Manager to manage Projects from a HSEQ perspective including regular monitoring and inspection of all staff involved in the Project.
  • Client Services Team

  • Completion and submission of weekly timesheets
  • Accommodation requests


    Adhere to the published instructions to ensure a safe method of working ensuring skills and knowledge are kept up-to-date and relevant for the task.

    To ensure that all work is carried out within a safe working environment and that risk is kept to a minimum for all.

    Install sub-duct, blown fibre tubing, COF and fibre bundles in line with project requirements.

    To deliver services against agreed operational project plans. Ensuring targets are met to maximise efficiency and ensure and financial profitability is protected.

    Preparation of the cable for Splicing and Termination.

    Terminating Fibre Optic Cable in ODF

    To deliver services against agreed operational project plans. Ensuring targets are met to maximise efficiency and ensure and financial profitability is protected.

    Testing & commissioning of Fibre Optic Cable by using the required test equipment.

    Provide test results and necessary documentation in line with customer requirements.

    Customers accepts and signs of service as fully operational.

    Accurately record work activities and escalate any problems or issues at the earliest opportunity.

    Communication is maintained throughout allowing for the early resolution of issues and removal of obstacles with the most appropriate resources.

    Ensure correct documentation is completed before work starts

    Ensure that problems are picked up regarding completion of the job before the work starts.

    Act professionally at all times and in accordance with company standards and the published code of conduct.

    Demonstrate a professional and flexible attitude to ensure that customer expectations are met.

    Minimise complaints and encourages positive feedback in terms of quality and approach. Improved delivery results will allow AFL to become a supplier of choice.

  • Knowledge and skills of telecommunications networks
  • Experience of working in a variety of Fibre Optic networks.
  • Knowledge of Telephony / HFC / Fibre principles / Testing.
  • Experience of installing cable in underground networks using approved techniques
  • Experience of installing cables and containment within customer premises
  • Basic Computer skills.
  • Good Communication skills.
  • Problem solving skills
  • Full Driving Licence.
  • Self Motivated / Team Player / Professional & Responsible.
  • Have a proven ability to understand and resolve difficult Situations / Issues
  • Basic knowledge of electrical safety
  • Laser safety and use.
  • Ability to use OTDR, PMD, CD, ILM; capture the results; analyse and identify issues.
  • Termination of all Fibre Cables
  • Experience of working with duct prints and job related documentation.
