Purpose :

Technical Focus : Carbon (Climate + GHG)

Expansion of renewable energy, energy storage, and energy efficiency practices are essential to create a net-zero economy where carbon emissions are reduced to the absolute minimum.

Successful candidates for the Subject Matter Expert Carbon role will have in-depth sector and technical knowledge around emerging technologies that can be deployed on our projects, the latest external research and thought leadership, a broad view of global policies that are emerging or already in place regulatory tracking and country commitments), a view of the up-and-coming energy companies new startups and renewable energy providers), and expert knowledge of the various carbon reporting and scope 3 measurement & tracking frameworks and platforms SBTi and GHG protocol).

This role will be responsible for :

  • Ecosystem partners : key stakeholder to the Innovation & Ecosystem team to identify and develop our strategic partners to drive new innovative carbon solutions to our clients.
  • Digital solutions : key stakeholder to our Global Solutions and Services community to prioritize and develop digital tools that accelerate net zero through accurate quantification of scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions and identification of opportunities to reduce energy and GHG emissions.
  • Standardization : work with our Global Solutions & Services team to embed minimum sustainable practices in standard operating procedures.
  • New solution development : partner to our Global Business Areas taking new research and development to identify and scale new opportunities and solutions that maximize greenhouse gas emissions reductions and energy use efficiency.
  • Project indicator measurement : partnering with our Impact & Systems team to develop the methodology, tools and systems to measure lifecycle carbon in our design & engineering projects in buildings, highways, etc.).
  • As-needed project opportunity and delivery : supporting our client, pursuit, and project teams to win and deliver strategic projects globally, maximizing decarbonization opportunities in our proposals and projects.
  • Campaign & thought leadership support : developing decarbonization-related thought leadership content to feed into campaigns and external presentations.
  • Subject Matter Expertise (SME) role

    To be Arcadis’ lead expert on the given sustainability subject matter expertise, and position Arcadis as a leader in this field.

    Five areas of Sustainability SMEs are : Carbon (Climate + GHG), Water Stewardship, Circular Economy, Nature & Biodiversity, and Environmental Justice).

    You should be an expert and practitioner in the field, regularly engaging with and / or contributing to what the state of the art thinking is, and what practical solutions / approaches are being developed in science, academia, non-profits and / or other relevant leading institutions.

    About 60% of your time should be focused on Arcadis building a bridge backwards from the ’state of the art’’ to incorporation into every Solution / Service Arcadis has, leading global communities of practice around this subject area, and furthering the company’s position in terms of thought leadership.

    You should embed this expertise into Arcadis’ standard operating procedures, as well as collaborate with the Impact + Systems team to devise how we will measure / track any impact in this area in our solutions / services.

    About 40% of your time will be focused on supporting Arcadis’ client outreach as requested by the Growth team - embedding your SME into any strategic pursuits + key client engagements in a way that is replicable and scalable.

    Individual accountabilities :

    Standardize Sustainability in All Solutions and Services

  • Ensure that the subject matter is holistically integrated into all solutions and services.
  • Standardize sustainability in priority standard operating procedures.
  • Partner with Global Solutions and Services Directors as necessary to develop better proposals and to participate in client discussions.
  • Lead engagement with internal / external experts in order to develop the KPI, process, and systems to enable the measurement of sustainability impact in projects.
  • Maximize Sustainability Opportunities in Strategic Pursuits Across All Solutions and Services

  • Develop and run the alternative approach board working in tandem with the global pursuits board.
  • Partner with the Growth team in proactive client identification and engagement in your area of expertise, utilizing hotspot analysis from the Impact & Systems team.
  • Support strategic pursuits and key client project delivery in relation to your subject expertise area.
  • Lead Communities of Practice

  • Grow global communities of practice, by building upon existing local groups and leveraging in-country GBA capability and expertise.
  • Develop content for sustainability training and awareness programs working in partnership with the Education & Engagement team.
  • Support identification of key external innovation partners Techstars).
  • Thought Leadership

  • Lead and support thought leadership pieces and campaigns.
  • Primary technical connection to WBCSD for relevant topics.
  • Collect and amplify best cases.
  • Global Service & Solution Directors.

  • Increased sustainability of Arcadis’ Solutions portfolio through the development of new frameworks, tools, and resources to directly drive progress against Arcadis’ Sustainability Ambition (shared with Solutions + Services directors, Growth + GBAs, with input / feedback from Global Sustainability Integration + Transformation team).
  • Integration of sustainability into the Arcadis Way to ensure sustainability is embedded into every aspect of its work (shared with Global Sustainability Integration + Transformation team, TAW team + all relevant stakeholders who own parts of the process).

    Required Qualifications :

  • Senior leader with experience building sustainability business cases, whilst having an overview of new innovations ensure our solutions are leading.
  • Deep understanding of best practices and new developments within the sustainability subject area.
  • Fluency with public speaking and experience presenting at conferences.
  • Prior participation in industry groups, network organizations, or others to drive advocacy efforts.
  • Strong influencing ability to train colleagues, empower colleagues, enable clients, and accelerate the transition to a sustainable world.
