Job Introduction

We are looking for a Commissioning Editor to join the Popular Factual and Factual Entertainment Commissioning team at the BBC.

  • The Factual commissioning team commissions a wide range of much-loved programmes each year across all our channels. The team is critical to delivering our strategy;
  • responsible for both generating and developing bold ground-breaking ideas and working with independent production companies to commission content based on a deep understanding of audience needs and the genre.

    Role Responsibility

    As a Commissioning Editor, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the diverse nature of our audience needs are reflected accurately in our ideas, and input into the development of the commissioning strategy for Popular Factual and factual entertainment.

    Day to day, you will be responsible for ensuring that editorial content is compliant with the BBC’s editorial standards and policies and that commissions are delivered on time, to the specification required and within budget.

    You’ll also inspire and engage independent producers by articulating your editorial priorities, and work with them to create and develop ideas that meet our audiences’ needs.

    You will ensure the quality of commissioned programmes is high and work closely with producers throughout the production process through to delivery.

    You’ll encourage risk-taking and innovation, identify key genre trends and seize opportunities to evolve the genre.Relationship management is a fundamental part of this role, acting as a key contact for suppliers during the development and production process, offering advice and guidance on our requirements, feedback on pitches and fostering collaborative working relationships.

    You will also manage and nurture relationships with key on screen and off screen talent and always be looking to identify new, emerging talent.

    Are you the right candidate?

  • Track record of commissioning or producing successful factual entertainment and popular factual formats.
  • Wide-ranging popular factual and factual entertainment programme making experience at a senior level.
  • Experience of developing and / or running brand new formats.
  • Significant understanding of current trends and issues within the broadcasting industry.
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to foster good relationships with a wide range of internal and external contacts, with the ability to deliver feedback to promote creative development.
  • Sound editorial judgment coupled with the ability to devise and develop new ideas, and foster creativity in others.
  • A record of realising creative ideas from start through to commission working within defined resources and demanding deadlines.
  • Demonstrable ability to think strategically about programmes and their scheduling and / or the ability to contribute towards strategy for the channel / department.
  • Audience focused in approach, aware of trends, topical issues and gaps in our output.
  • Evidence of a commitment to creating diverse content and to the BBC’s diversity strategy and policies.
