Job purpose :

  • Reporting into the UK Chief Scientific Officer this role will provide senior UK Pharma wide leadership and technical pharmaceutical medicine expertise to enable and empower UK Pharma associates to meet patient needs;
  • ensuring relevant internal and external stakeholders can clearly understand the risks, benefits and place of Novartis Medicines.

    This includes coordinating UK medical governance across multiple franchise and functional teams, defining and ensuring attainment of excellence in medical affairs capabilities across the UK Pharma medical organization and leading the UK Medical Information and Engagement team.

    Will act as a deputy for the UK CSO in the leadership of the UK Medical Affairs teams when required

    Key Responsibilities :

  • Ensure and co-ordinate UK medical governance (including operational accountability for the medical affairs aspects of relevant internal and external regulatory and compliance requirements) across multiple franchise and functional teams;
  • specifically working across UK franchise medical, commercial, market access, legal, compliance and UK GDD teams to ensure good medical governance and reflect the interest of patients.

  • Develop and maintain a critical mass of expert Final Medical ABPI Code Signatories and bring ABPI Code Medical Signatory expertise to the development of UK compliance processes and procedures.
  • Represent UK Pharma with European / Global Medical Governance, Medical Operations and CMO teams. Ensuring that the UK perspective is considered in the development of global medical standards, policies and procedures and that global medical standards, policies and procedures are implemented effectively in the UK.
  • Develop and operate a system of attaining and maintaining excellence in medical affairs capabilities across the UK Pharma medical organization;
  • including Pharmaceutical Medicine knowledge, Field Medical Excellence and Medical Engagement Excellence.

  • Ensure Educational Supervision for Pharmaceutical Medicine Speciality Trainees in Novartis UK Pharma
  • Leadership of the UK Medical Information and Engagement team through direct line management of the Head of Medical Information and Engagement (including oversight of the operation of UK Medicines Access Programmes).

    Minimum requirements

    The ideal candidate will have :

  • MBChB / MD or equivalent professional medical qualification. (Pharm D or equivalent clinical practitioner may be acceptable in an other-wise exceptional candidate)
  • Highly Desirable :

  • Demonstrable experience of successful leadership in pharmaceutical company medical affairs.
  • Demonstrable success in leadership across multiple matrix functions or in a complex operating environment, such as a pharmaceutical company country affiliate or global functional / therapy area team
  • Experienced ABPI Final Medical Signatory with a track history of sound judgement
  • Ability to influence multiple junior, peer and senior stakeholders through excellent interpersonal skills
  • Desirable

  • 1. Previous Therapy Area Head role (or equivalent) in a country medical affairs department
  • 2. Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine PMST educational supervisor experience
