Wessex Engineering and Construction Services (WECS) is responsible for the delivery of water treatment, waste water and network projects across the Wessex Water region.
In AMP 7, WECS is increasing the amount of design being carried out by its own internal resources, in addition to working more closely with their consultant partners to ensure consistency in design output.
Therefore, there is a requirement for a Technical Manager, who will report directly to the group manager for design.
Working within the team, the role will primarily involve taking ownership and signing off all technical elements of the design activities being undertaken by the internal design team, providing direct management, training, mentoring and guidance to the team.
You may also be required to support the group manager in ensuring consistency in the designs being undertaken by external delivery partners.
The role will be central to the successful transition between design and its constructor partners, and will cover both treatment and networks, and clean and waste.
You will be responsible for :
the technical management of the optioneering, outline design, detailed design and construction support stages being undertaken by the internal mechanical design team
supporting the project manager with the preparation and agreement of fee proposals, programmes and the general management of contracts and resources to ensure the team delivers projects in line with the agreed financial approvals
reviewing, auditing and approving all technical reports, appraisals, designs and drawings to ensure they all comply with our health and safety, technical, legal and environmental standards
ensuring lowest whole life cost solutions are adopted based on net present value analysis, thereby ensuring the company gets the right solution for the best value
providing technical guidance and advice to ensure the success of projects and the cost-effective achievement of company capital scheme objectives
supporting the design project manager with audit and quality improvement reviews
technical post project reviews, investigating both successful and failing schemes with a view to learn lessons and continually improve
leading any challenges on Wessex Water technical and design standards, raised either internally or through our external partners
supporting external partners when there is a particular complex technical issue that puts the project delivery at risk or as otherwise directed by the treatment design manager
supporting the team with the preparation of design documentation being delivered by the design team
representing technical within the WECS design leadership team
supporting the delivery programme manager with responding to RFIs and reviewing detailed design deliverables as provided by the relevant mechanical and electrical contractor
supporting project engineers in presenting designs to both internal and external stakeholders to ensure the approval of what may be controversial issues
acting as a mentor to the more junior members of the team and instilling a can-do culture within the team to support cost-effective delivery and personal development.
The candidate will have :
Preferably CEng with the Institute of Civil Engineers or MIMechE with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
relevant experience working within a design environment, including operational and construction experience
experience in a similar role as a technical reviewer, within a commercial design and construct environment
