An experienced engineering manager in R&D is urgently required by a global engineering team that’s undertakes projects focused in fuel development contributing to fundamental research to enable future development, understanding new engine hardware and trends, incorporation of new component chemistry, collaboration with engine manufacturers and first tier suppliers, and support the development of new product platforms.

The Engineering R&D Manager is a global position, managing the engineering and field trial aspects of the company’s research into market leading products for current and emerging automotive and marine engine technology.

This vibrant team develops new engineering tools for researching and certifying new engine products and provides expert engineering support internally to an extensive R&D department, and collaborates externally with third party engineering test houses, commercial fleets, and vehicle & engine parts manufacturers.

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for ensuring projects are resourced with appropriate skills and are delivered effectively.

You will also provide expertise and innovative guidance on how best to carry out projects and achieve competitive advantage.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of colleagues spread over at least four global locations including recruitment, general colleague support, development and appraisals.
  • Accountable for building Engineering as a core strength and differentiator supporting the company’s technology leadership strategy.
  • Assimilate needs from current and future technical challenges to advise future strategy on a 5 year horizon in partnership with appropriate Marketing & Technology strategy teams.
  • Integrate activities where projects are led by other technical teams but success requires significant engineering support both internally and / or with an external test provider.
  • Develop new methods and have oversight of large external contracts at 3rd party engine testing institutes.
  • Define how resources can be used to optimally achieve success, maximise return from the operational budget and make proposals for alternative funding approaches.
  • A deep understanding of automotive engineering or engine tests and scientific methodology.
  • Qualifications and Experience

  • Have managerial engineering leadership in a global company in an R&D setting.
  • A technical background in Engines Engineering, Powertrain Development or related discipline is essential.
  • A expert knowledge of fuels / oils technology, what impacts its performance and the design of engine.
  • Demonstrated strong safety leadership.
  • A deep understanding of automotive engineering or engine tests and scientific methodology.
  • Effective leadership skills and the ability to translate strategy into action and meaningful goals.
  • The benefits package includes discretionary bonus (approx. 15%), 25 days holiday per annum, company pension scheme and life assurance.
