Main Purpose of the Post

The Postgraduate Research Office (PGR Office) was established within the Academic Services Directorate in April 2016 with a remit to support the University’s strategic ambitions as they relate to postgraduate research : enhancing the PGR student experience and student environment, increasing participation and success with doctoral training and high-profile scholarship programmes and supporting growth in the size of the PGR community.

The PGR Office collaborates with all Colleges / Schools and Professional Service Directorates within the University and engages fully with the PGR student community.

It leads PGR activity aligned to all of the UK’s research councils and a number of charitable organisations that support doctoral training initiatives, such as Wellcome and the Leverhulme Trust.

In 2018, it supported £45M in doctoral training proposals. The PGR Office is also home for post-award delivery of research council funded doctoral training programmes, including the ESRC Wales DTP and the STFC CDT in Data Intensive Science.

In addition, it leads several University supported excellence scholarships, including the James Callaghan Scholarships, the Swansea University Research Excellence Scholarships and the Swansea University Strategic Partnership Research Scholarships.

The PGR Office is responsible for leading training and skills development for research students and supervisors. The Office has a growing portfolio of events and activities, some of which are aligned to training and development opportunities, including an annual 3 Minute Thesis and FameLab competition and annual PGR Showcase event.
