  • We’re responsible for running the mobile network for more than 30 million customers; building products and services used by more than 10 million broadband, voice and global IP communication customers;
  • and switching 95 per cent of the UK broadcast content from the BT Tower, London.

    You will have the opportunity to lead the software design, development and testing within the BT Smart Hub development team.

    The core purpose of this role is to contribute to the development of BTs new broadband router software development strategy, in-

    sourcing the developing capability for our next generation hardware platforms. You will set the direction for technical developments of the Hub software backlog, utilising Agile development methodologies, in line with industry technical standards and the strategic needs of BT’s broadband product set.

    The role holder will be expected to act as a lead development engineer and point of contact for the wider TV & Broadband team and related component teams.

    What you'll be doing

  • Lead the development team with responsibility for the design and development of Hub software.
  • Drive BT's strategic roadmap for Hub software and develop product requirements in support of the business needs and the capability of evolving technology.
  • Drive test strategy best practices with a primary emphasis on automated testing.
  • Be a key contributor to the development of BT owned software components.
  • Prioritise design team activities in line with project developments, BT's strategy, and product line requirements.

  • Demonstrable experience in system software design and development using the C programming language, ideally on embedded systems
  • Experience in Linux kernel and driver development is preferred.
  • Strong scripting skills, e.g. bash, Python
  • Experienced team leader, able to motivate and direct others with prior line management experience preferably.
  • Extensive expertise in building and debugging software for embedded systems development, with demonstrable experience of shell scripting, debugging tools, e.g. gdb.
  • Use of code revision, issue tracking and continuous integration tools, e.g. git, Jira, Jenkins or Travis.
  • Understanding of the hardware and software constraints related to developing home gateways or similar consumer electronics systems
  • Ability to adopt new and emerging work methods to provide innovative solutions to meet client needs.
  • Prior experience of, and the ability to technically initiate, motivation and mentoring as part of a team.
  • Ability to quickly gather requirements, explore multiple approaches and suggest optimal solutions.
  • Experience of working with Agile delivery methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban; iterative planning and task estimation is desirable.
  • Willingness to undertake self-development in required areas.
  • Experience with product backlog management including task estimation
  • Strong software networking experience
  • Collaborative and innovative approach to problem solving
  • Writing and maintaining software which supports multiple platforms
  • Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment and Test Driven Development
  • Automated test strategies
  • Working to ambitious timescales
  • Ideally you will have :

  • Experience of building products using OpenWRT or similar
  • Experience using containers, e.g. LXC or Docker, ideally on embedded systems
  • An understanding of the TR-069 protocol and TR-181 data model design and use
  • Experience of Wi-Fi, cellular, DECT, voice or hybrid technologies
  • A working knowledge of Home Gateway standards including, but not restricted to : IPv4 / IPv6, PPP, IPoE, Wi-Fi, UPnP / Multicast, IPsec and EoGRE.
  • Experience using JTAG debuggers to bring up and debug hardware
