Key Responsibilities

  • Responsibility for the operation of the firm’s client and office bank accounts; to include timely bank reconciliations in line with the requirements of SARs, monitoring of receipts, making / authorising payments, close liaison with the credit controller to ensure appropriate transfers and liaising with the firm’s bankers.
  • Ensure that systems and procedures comply with the SRA rules and practices; to report on and monitor breaches, to be proactive in recommending changes to ensure compliance to these rules.
  • Responsibility for the smooth running of the month end process including the billing process
  • To suggest changes in working methods; capitalise on potential for increased effectiveness and develop the service provided by the Finance Team to its internal clients.
  • Manage housekeeping including both time and disbursements.
  • To liaise with fee earners and the legal aid accounts team regarding ledger reports to assist with matter management
  • Dealing with client residual balances.
  • To manage the accounts team
  • Ensure that workflow is monitored, and work is allocated in line with the capabilities and capacity of team members
  • Manage appraisals for the team in addition to providing support and guidance on day to day matters to team members
  • Ensure that team members receive the appropriate training, development and coaching to assist them in maximising performance in their role
  • Manage the team to ensure that time is used efficiently and effectively.
  • To manage and liaise with the auditors in respect of the annual SARs audit and deal with their queries on request.
  • To contribute to the training, development, and up skilling of fee earners; to provide constructive feedback to clients outside the finance team so that training needs can be promptly identified and addressed.

  • Qualifications

  • Good passes in English and Maths GCSE’s or equivalent
  • Skills & Experience

  • A minimum of five years’ technical experience within a legal cashiering role in a mid to large accounts team
  • A minimum of two years proven supervisory and management experience
  • Experience of appraising and developing / coaching and mentoring team members
  • Up to date and thorough working knowledge of both the SRA rules and AML regulations
  • Member of the ILFM
  • Highly organised and able to coordinate / delegate a varied workload and manage workflows
  • Solid stakeholder management skills with an ability to create and maintain relationships across the Firm
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure
  • Change management / implementation a distinct advantage
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proactive in approach / positive can do’ attitude
  • Ability to problem solve and have a result orientated approach
  • Highly process driven with a passion for continuous improvement
  • IT literate and conversant using MS Excel, Outlook, MS Word, and knowledge of financial reporting systems
  • Experience of using a computerised practice management system
