Following multiple high-profile partnerships and our most recent fundraise we are now adding a key appointment, Head of New Target Validation .

Exscientia has developed a ground-breaking approach to target identification, Centaur Biology. By applying deep learning to comprehensive knowledge graphs, our Target Analysis team use this approach to identify emerging drug targets.

The Head of New Target Validation will lead a team to deploy cutting-edge genetic and pharmacological approaches to interrogate these targets to provide an understanding of their role in signalling and functional pathways, and ultimately in disease.

The disease focus of the work will be in oncology and immunology. Based at our brand-new labs in Oxford, the successful candidate will lead the target validation group strategy, developing both internal and external capabilities for these purposes, including recruiting and leading a team of drug target validation biologists.

Your team will provide critical data and insights to target selection for the company portfolio and provide support and cellular reagents to therapeutic project teams to execute drug discovery projects.

You will have the opportunity to use your experiences in drug discovery to provide leadership to therapeutic projects.We are looking for an outstanding leader with deep expertise in genetic technologies for target validation to drive the adoption of targets into Exscientia’s drug discovery portfolio.

Based on emerging targets from Centaur Biology and other approaches, you will generate target validation datasets to create therapeutic hypotheses, with the aim of initiating drug discovery projects in the areas of oncology and immunology.

These datasets will include signalling and functional assay endpoints from genetic and pharmacological studies in relevant cellular systems.

You will use your expertise and experience in drug discovery to provide an understanding of target tractability and translation through disease.

You will work closely with the Target Analysis team to provide a pipeline of informed targets for Exscientia’s discovery platform.

It is anticipated that you will provide leadership to internal and external therapeutic projects.

What will you be doing in this role?

  • You will develop and direct the New target Validation group’s strategy
  • You identify and exploit the most relevant and effective cellular and technological approaches to target validation
  • You will build and direct the team’s resources, including internal and external approaches
  • You will be able to provide a convincing target hypothesis and datasets to support adoption of targets into the discovery portfolio
  • You will build the New Target Validation group and provide inspirational leadership
  • You will build effective scientific relationships across Exscientia and with the external scientific community
  • You will provide leadership to therapeutic projects, using your experience of drug discovery to guide and drive projects to candidate discovery
  • What will you bring to the role?

  • Highly experienced in target validation and preclinical proof of concept studies in drug discovery
  • Broad knowledge across a range of target types and disease areas, preferably with a depth of knowledge in one or more of Exscientia’s core therapeutic areas (oncology, fibrosis and immunology)
  • Well informed in drug discovery, including target identification and preclinical research.
  • Good understanding of the latest molecular technology and biology requirements for developing suitable assays to evaluate potential target or mechanisms
  • Track record of accomplishment in research as evidenced by quality and quantity of publications and / or inventions
  • Evidence of successful project leadership
  • Track record of leading external collaborations
  • Demonstrated ability to organize the activities of a team of scientists including managing relationships with academic collaborators and CROs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation and organization of data for efficient presentation to any internal or external senior audience or partner.
  • People management experience and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to inspire and lead teams, both directly and across functional groups
  • Effective written and communication skills to be able to present complex ideas / data to technical and non-technical audiences in a convincing and effective manner
