The Role

Thefunction of the Staff Officer is to provide comprehensive support to members ofthe Force Executive Team in fulfilling their responsibilities.

The role is a two year fixed term contractand welcomes applicants who are able to demonstrate they possess the skills andexperience relevant to the role.

Role Responsibilities

You will :

  • Provide a comprehensive and highly confidentialsupport service to the Force Executive Team, working with their ExecutiveAssistants to manage the workload across multiple portfolio areas.
  • Have an awareness of current policy andprocedure within West Midlands Police and have an awareness of proposed futuredevelopments particularly in relation to the nominated portfolio areas.
  • Environmentally scan (both internally andexternally) to detect emerging issues related to the portfolio area and briefaccordingly.
  • Provide an appropriate andprofessional response to a wider range of enquiries (both internal andexternal). This will include papers and briefing documents for a wide range ofstakeholders including the Office of Police and Crime Commission, Home Office,Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary Fire and Rescue Service, NationalPolice Chiefs Council, Members of Parliament and members of the public.
  • Regularly attend portfolio based andforce wide meetings, whilst maintaining the highest levels of integrity indealing with information of a confidential nature.
  • Essential Knowledge and Experience

    You will have :

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with an ability to produce and critique reports, papers and deliver briefings
  • Highly developed influencing and negotiation skills with senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and engage withstakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to identify risks and issues, solvecomplex problems and innovate.
  • Be personably credible, with discretion andintegrity.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to managesuccessfully in a political environment.
  • Able to deliver results in a pressuredenvironment with the ability to make rational decisions and take decisiveaction.
  • Confident and capable in providing advice on policy, procedure and strategy up to and including strategic level
  • Conditions

    Based atLloyd House, in Birmingham city centre, the role has standard full timecontractual hours with agile / flexible working available.

    You will workalongside a team of other Staff Officers to provide cover for the Command Teambetween 0800 hours and 1700 hours on weekdays.

    Thisrole is a two year fixed term contract.

    Interviewswill take place in October 2020.

    Please note : There are two posts available which havediffering start dates. The first start date will be in November 2020 (subject to successful vetting), with the secondstart date in January 2021 (subjectto successful vetting).
