The railway industry is going through an exciting time as we design products for the Digital Railway . Due to this continued growth, we need a Senior Design Engineer to join our Product Design and Development team in Crewe, Cheshire.

You will work closely with engineers in the UK Engineering team based at Doncaster, Southport, Stockport, Leeds and York to design and develop new and innovative products for the rail industry and other industries deemed as appropriate by Unipart Rail and enhance and extend the product life of existing designs to support business growth.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Develop LabVIEW based testing protocols to support FoC, RCM and ATE designs
  • To liaise with the service cells to develop best practice for product build.
  • To design and / or using EasyPC for circuits and PCB design the models or circuits used for conceptual design of new products.
  • Implementation of Electronic / Electrical and / or Mechanical design concepts from conceptual design to full customer approval.
  • Prototype build, assembly and fault find down to component level.
  • To improve / enhance the documentation supplied to the service cells and customer needs.
  • To review documentation generated by their peers confirm as the standard of acceptance against the product innovation quality documentation process and against good sound engineering practice and principles.
  • To generate documentation to support the projects i.e. DCN’s, Document Log Sheets, Drawing Log Sheets and BOMs.
  • To support First of Class (FoC) testing on customer installations as required finalise the design process.
  • Support compliance testing as deemed appropriate for the product i.e. EMC, Environmental, LVD etc.
  • To research alternatives for any obsolescent components in the development of new products as part of a pre-production review.
  • To work as part of a team of Product Innovation Design Engineers reporting directly to the Product Development Manager and under the guidance of the Project Manager.
  • To support the Cells with implementation of concepts through to the manufacturing stage.
  • Support customer / product investigations and product development.
  • As a Senior Design Engineer, you will already be a subject matter expert and used to taking the technical lead for your project.

    You will have excellent coaching and communication skills and be comfortable sharing your expertise with other members of engineering, customers and suppliers.

    You will be the technical lead for the design, responsible from ideas and concept to successful delivery.

    You will have experience working with LabView and electronics / electric circuit design and possess programming skills in C language.

    An understanding of digital signal processing techniques, and safety critical systems, experience working within the rail sector is also desirable.

    You will be educated to degree level in an Engineering discipline (Ideally Electronics or Science based qualification) or relevant experience.
