About the role
Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an ENVIRONMENTAL & SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER SMA to join our Highways team to work in Reading.
Role Purpose :
ROLE PURPOSE To manage and ensure that the SMA framework is set up and delivered successfully in terms of environment and sustainability (E&S).
Working with the client, design and pre-construction teams as well as external stakeholders to ensure E&S constructability is considered early, planned for and costed appropriately prior to construction.
The role will also manage and ensure that all live SMA Projects comply with all relevant environmental legislation, consents, objectives, targets and other environmental commitments, including those arising from planning requirements throughout its construction.

You will have the following accountabilities :

Coordinate, manage and lead all E&S employees on the SMA framework
Coordinate and undertake regular Site inspections with the construction teams to monitor compliance with the environmental licenses / consents and procedures for the works
Appoint, train and monitor performance and development of SMA environmental / sustainability teams
Produce, review and update the Project Management Plans for all SMA projects
Maintaining and updating plans and procedures including the EMP during the works; Approval of relevant documents (CEMP, method statements) in consultation with Highways England's Project Manager and the appropriate statutory bodies
Act as a point of contact between regulatory authorities (Environment Agency, Natural England, Heritage England, Local Authorities) and other third party consultees)
Keep record of all activities on Site, environmental problems identified, transgressions noted and a schedule of all tasks undertaken;
and provide appropriate professional and practical advice to contractors, consultants and project team members associated with environmental and ecological issues
Acc Development and delivery of environmental training for site personnel
Interface with the Designers Environmental Team, the Designers site team and Landscape / Ecological Clerk of Works and the Clients Environmental personnel
Assisting with the development of emergency and safety procedures and training of staff in the use and disposal of spillage control equipment, as required
Preparation and submission of Amendments to the Projects Section 61 Consents in conjunction with the Construction Teams
Assist Operations Team and Supervisory Staff in undertaking project related Work Package Plans method statements and risk assessments in line with Balfour Beatty requirements
Undertake Risk Assessment and Work Package Plan reviews to ensure that these documents are suitable and sufficient for the tasks to be undertaken and comply with the minimum company requirements.
Applies to direct and subcontract works
Undertake Environmental compliance evaluations, inspections and audits at prescribed intervals record outputs and liaise with site management to ensure actions are completed.
Acc Promote a positive environmental culture through proactive engagement and communications with project teams, including the supply chain
Investigate environmental incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty standards to identify and share lessons learned.
Monitor and report to line management the implementation of actions to prevent recurrence
Maintain records, minutes, registers and data as required
Review of the Environmental elements of the Risk Register
Overseeing environmental monitoring, including noise, dust and water quality
Collate environmental information from the construction teams, including attendance and contribution to team meetings
Collate and report environmental data for project environmental KPIs
Ensure that the requirements of the Balfour Beatty Business Management System, including processes, reference materials and forms are cascaded and implemented, with regular reviews of updates as necessary
Assist with the collation of the HSES briefing records and update spreadsheets as required
Timely collation and verification of project data for statistics and Monthly Reports for Head Office and Project Director
Produce visual Environmental performance indicators and trends.
Who we're looking for
You will have the following qualities and experience :
Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability
Environmental Degree or related discipline (preferred) or NEBOSH Environmental Diploma or IEMA Certificate
Chartered Environmentalist (preferred)
Relevant CSCS Card
Strong working knowledge of ecological issues and applicable legislation for protection of wildlife, including regulations and guidance
Investigation (root cause analysis) techniques for incident investigation
Takes ownership and accountability for tasks and sees through to successful completion
Understanding and knowledge of confidentiality requirements of role
Experience in managing others who provide administrative support within a Health, Safety and Environment department
Experience of chairing meetings, both with the workforce and supply chain
Strong and effective communication skills to deliver key safety messages
Strong understanding and experience of the construction and civil engineering process, including constraints and requirements of specialist heavy-civils operations (e.
g. piling, earthworks, lifting, pavement, drainage etc.)
The following qualities / experience are desirable :
Ability to seek out and deliver innovative methods of training and instruction, together with adaptive styles of communication with the workforce and staff alike
