Job Summary

Post-doctoral research fellow in experimental physics. To collaborate with the PI and to work with the group technical staff and possibly undergraduate project students.

The initial strategy and the conceptual design of the experiment will be decided together with the PI. The organisation and day to day running of the project will be the responsibility of the PDRF.

The PDRF will carry out experiments on assembled equipment and write scientific papers based on the results.

Main Duties

To work together with the PI (Professor Clive Speake) to :

  • Decide on a strategy to optimise science outcomes from the project;
  • Finalise the design of an experimental set-up and assemble vacuum components, micro-positioners, torsion balance and associated electronics;
  • Use the new device to measure short-range forces between metals and / or dielectrics.
  • The goal will be to further our knowledge of this topic and to produce high quality publications that will serve to develop an essentially new area of research

    Person Specification

    The research will require experimental skills in the assembly of delicate mechanical suspensions and working with ultra-high vacuum systems.

    Some experience in electronics and Lab-View programming language is also desirable.

    Qualifications and Experience

  • PhD in experimental physics
  • Experience in delicate mechanical systems and clean UHV systems or equivalent
  • Some experience in electronics and mechanical design software and experimental control software such as Lab View.
  • Some post-doctoral research experience is desirable.
