About the External Relations department

External Relations provides intelligence and insight to inform UCAS’ strategy, and underpin the development, delivery, and improvement of UCAS’ operations, products, and services.

It also maintains UCAS’ reputation, and ensures customers are able to interact with the business in a fulfilling way, while maintaining the UCAS brand.

The department is divided into three primary functions :

  • Media and Corporate Communications responsible for securing UCAS’ public reputation, and ensuring corporate communications are consistent with business strategy to internal and external stakeholders, and media.
  • Strategy and Policy deploys UCAS’ data, research, and analysis appropriately, and ensures UCAS’ strategy, products, and services are informed by market trends, through proactive engagement with governments, funders, and regulators to inform business strategy.
  • Marketing and Events ensures the conception and delivery of engaging marketing campaigns, while growing and protecting UCAS’ brand value and reputation, ensuring marketing and customer interactions are easy, enjoyable, and fulfilling.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    The Strategic Product Manager is responsible for the creation of the product strategy and its translation into detailed requirements, to ensure development delivers customer value.

    They will lead on executing the vision, and through influencing, create buy-in both internally and externally, as well as developing product pricing and positioning strategies.

    They will lead on defining the why, when, and what of the product the development team builds.

    Strategic :

  • Lead on creating the product strategy, and execution of products that solve a business need, to deliver value and articulate the voice of customer into product development.
  • Understand customer needs and validate solutions, influencing and driving customer outcomes into delivery.
  • Analyse the market and competitive conditions, laying out a product vision that is differentiated and delivers unique value, based on customer demands.
  • Act as the internal voice of the customer, and work with customers to constantly understand, communicate, and influence their needs, and participate in the validation of the proposed solution.
  • Understand the budget, and influence how strategic themes shape the strategic direction, to develop business cases.
  • Lead the development of product roadmaps, prioritising building what matters most to achieve the strategic goals and initiatives behind the product, and which illustrates at a high level how features are to be implemented and deliver value.
  • Have a clear understanding of the cost to run the service, and identify opportunities to drive efficiencies for both UCAS and the sector.
  • Product :

  • Break down the strategy into component, product-specific elements, and lead on articulating the business value to the product team, so they understand the intent behind the new product or product release.
  • Create epic-level outcomes based on customer need and market definition.
  • Lead requirement definition for each feature and the desired UX.
  • Lead on prioritisation of features by ranking them against the strategic goals and initiatives, based on the value the new feature will deliver to customers and the business.
  • Maintain an end-to-end service perspective, which reflects the requirements of all our customers, including integration with other UCAS services, recognising UCAS Media as an essential part of the services we offer.
  • Participate in PI planning, lead on presenting the vision which highlights the proposed epics / features of the solution along with upcoming milestones, and approve PI objectives, establishing business value .
  • Lead on defining the release process and coordinating all the activities required to bring the product to market.
  • Work closely with the development team on the technical specifications, and ensure teams have all the information they need to deliver a complete product to market.
  • Package
