Due to the expansion of our environmental activities, we are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our Environmental Department as a Catchment Scientist for our western supply area.

The successful applicant will have strong organisational and communication skills, as well as knowledge of drinking water supply, environmental or agricultural practices.

As part of your role you will co-ordinate and undertake catchment management monitoring in river basin and groundwater catchments, in conjunction with other Water Companies, the Environment Agency, Natural England and other stakeholders to quantify and manage diffuse and point source pollution risks to South East Water's abstractions.

You will complete varied field and desk-based activities to determine potential pollution hot spots within designated catchments and be involved in planning suitable monitoring strategies.

Tasks will include :

  • The collection of samples from South East Water catchments including rivers and boreholes, meeting all Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) requirements
  • To download and manage hydrometric data from borehole loggers, rain gauges etc.
  • Handling and analysis of this monitoring data to determine sources of pollution
  • Representation at external events
  • Assisting in the production of reports on catchment management activities.
  • The successful applicant will :

  • Be a professionally qualified scientist, or an interest in science
  • Excellent level of knowledge of environmental agricultural practice, land management and factors contributing to diffuse and point source pollution of drinking water
  • An understanding of water quality standards and regulations
  • A methodical and conscientious approach, be an effective planner, be able to respond to change and hold a flexible approach to workload
  • Experience of using hydrometric logging apparatus
  • Strong IT skills as well as good communication skills
  • Hold a clean driving license, a company van will be provided.
  • The successful candidate will be based at the following location; Farnborough.
