Diageo’s Board is ultimately responsible for the risk management framework and the oversight of its operation by management.
Together, the Audit & Risk Committee ( ARC ) and the Audit Committee ( AC ) assist the Board in this oversight. Risk owners across the business are responsible for day-to-day risk management and decision-making including risk identification, assessment, mitigation, monitoring and management.
Working closely with the GAR Leadership Team (GAR LT), the Global Risk Senior Manager will support the Board and its committees by : a) proposing risk management policies, systems and processes to facilitate a consistent approach to the identification, assessment and management of risks;
b) providing specialist advice and training for the Board, ARC / AC committees and first line of defence on risk-related matters;
c) as part of the GAR audit execution, conducting objective review and challenge of the consistent and effective implementation of the risk management framework;
and d) ensuring there is appropriate reporting and escalation to the Board or its committees of matters relating to risk and / or risk appetite.
Technologies and business models are changing quickly, and in hand so are the related risks and the opportunities. The ideal candidate will be adept in emerging risks (including those related to an increased digital footprint) to help the business look ahead and predict risk incidents and their impact with greater accuracy and speed.
This role is part of the Global Audit & Risk Leadership Team and will be based in London. (Alternate locations will be considered.
Up to thirty percent international travel will be required.
About the role :
The purpose of the role is to take an active and independent leadership role in supporting and challenging the Diageo Board, Executive and Business Leaders to set and deliver an appropriate risk management strategy that aids delivery of long-lasting holistic business performance.
This includes equipping the Audit Committee and ARC to enact appropriate oversight of the risk management agenda.
This role operates globally with many senior stakeholders, including the Diageo Board and Executive, subject matter experts, functions and markets, and must influence and hold these stakeholders to account to set and execute robust risk management standards.
Technologies such as IoT, robotics, AI and changing business models will continue to advance with pace, creating new and complex risks including cybersecurity risks, Data privacy risks and third-party risks.
Risk assessment will require the need to move into predictive analysis as well as creating risk resilience. This role must demonstrate confidence and competence in supporting Diageo’s response to these risks.
This role is a member of the GAR LT and, in addition to the specific delivery responsibilities of this role, has direct accountability for overseeing the development and delivery of the GAR strategy, including the business partnering, assurance and talent agenda.
The role needs to deliver its responsibilities in such a way that protects GAR’s need to provide an independent opinion on the quality of the control environment.
Leadership Responsibilities & Capabilities
Acts as a business partner on risk management to cross functional shareholders, including, but not limited to, General Managers, Finance Directors, DBS Leadership Teams, Group Functions and the Executive.
Able to hold the tension on roles and responsibilities and provide effective challenge to activities and decisions that may materially affect Diageo’s risk profile.
Ensures the ARC and Audit Committee are equipped to enact the right level of oversight on the risk management agenda.
Energise, equip and inspire the organisation to construct solutions to embed risk management into the fabric of the business.
Envisions the future and is bold in execution. Work with GAR LT team to embrace technology and develop a strategy and tools to better predict and prevent risk incidents.
Demonstrates high level of personal integrity over compliance, control and risk activities and ensures others do the same.
Working with the GAR LT, develop and execute a forward-looking vision for risk management. Leverage best practices internally and externally and bring new approaches that will help drive greater efficiency and effectiveness, specifically the adoption of technology solutions to shift from retrospective analysis to looking ahead and predict risk incidents and the impact with greater accuracy and speed.
Refresh Diageo’s principle risks and mitigation plans through an iterative process with senior management enabling the Board to identify, analyse, understand and manage current and emerging material risks within its business.
Incorporate any external developments in governance, risk and control field including any regulatory or technological developments or changes which could significantly impact Diageo.
Support the ARC and Audit Committee to periodically review and enhance the Global Risk Management Standard and Global Risk Appetite.
Provide meaningful reporting for the AC and ARC and other decision makers as necessary that helps them reach conclusions on the effectiveness of the risk management framework;
the completeness and appropriateness of the risk identification and analysis, ongoing effectiveness of risk controls, and prioritisation and management of action plans;
exceptions to risk appetite and risk tolerances.
Working with the GAR LT, provide insight on Diageo’s highest risk areas and support the business to develop common solutions.
Understand the profile of risk across the business, with particular focus on new complex risks, working with subject matter experts and using external networks to help management fully understand and manage these risks, in line with Diageo’s risk appetite.
Take part in the execution of audit assignments to test and assess the implementation of a strong risk management framework and provide an opinion on whether key existing or emerging risks are being appropriately managed.
Ensure all assurance work is delivered to the high standards required by GAR’s methodology. Provide insights and solutions that promote effective and efficient business governance, enhanced controls and better risk management.
About you :
Minimum 8 years’ experience in an audit / risk / compliance / strategy function of a large international company or Big 4 in the area of governance, risk management and audit.
Professional accounting designation required. MBA or degree in risk management would also be beneficial.
Excellent quantitative and analytical skills. Strong understanding of SAP and advanced excel skills.
Risk management experience in an environment where emerging technologies have been deployed. Functional excellence in best practice risk management approaches include predictive risk analysis.
Proven experience of building, developing and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders at all levels. Able to influence and take strategic decisions across the business.
Strong interpersonal skills - ability to communicate effectively at all levels, internally & externally, written & verbal.
Ability to provide risk reporting tailored to the relevant audience.
Possesses a high energy level, intellectual curiosity and strong work ethic with a commitment to continuous improvement in a dynamic and changing environment.
