Job Description

This role includes leading the category planning, strategic sourcing and management of spend (including supplier and contract management) for assigned category area(s), as determined by the Head of Procurement and the procurement leadership team.

A Category Manager at RSA is a role that exists to help deliver measurable efficiencies in a challenging economic climate through a professional service provided to the rest of the organisation.

Further, this role will also include developing the procurement community within RSA, providing a flexible and creative support to transform operations, exhibiting high standards of corporate governance and establishing RSA as a leading practice organisation in the field of procurement operations.

This role involves interacting and working closely with the procurement leadership while also working very closely with senior stakeholders in the business / service function within RSA.

The Category Manager will also manage the sourcing and analytics team on a projects basis (when required for specific project or business work) and use their expertise in development and execution of agreed category strategy(ies) in alignment with the business objectives.

This role will directly report into a Senior Category Manager which in turn will report into the Head of Procurement. The post holder will be based in an office environment and may be required to attend evening meetings or other out-

of-hours events on occasion as based on business needs.

Role Requirements

  • Full responsibility for the total spend related to the category (ies) in scope
  • Highly pro-active leadership, decision making and influence on specific categories of procurement spend within RSA UK
  • Managing category procurement planning and strategy development (including supplier management plan / strategy) with due consideration for political, economic, social, technological, legal, market, and environmental impact for RSA UK
  • Expert authority for both procurement processes, regulations and practice generally and leading expert authority in RSA UK for the procurement and commercial landscape for the category(ies) of procurement spend for which the postholder is responsible
  • Working independently and as part of team as well as managing others as required to deliver business objectives
  • Ability to give confidence to stakeholders, customers and suppliers at the highest level, resulting in :
  • high impact professionalism and authority
  • a shared view of procurement as a strategic activity by all stakeholders where there are clear and shared positive aspirations regarding the purpose, direction and contribution to procurement
  • enhanced Programme and Project Management to support improved corporate performance.

  • Support the governance of the procurement operations, including cross-functional collaboration and the effective prioritisation, deployment, control and monitor of spend across the relevant spend areas
  • Support the establishment of a new way of working demonstrating the value of procurement, setting standards, reinforcing the enabling culture and approach and embedding the implementation of category management across the organisation

    Responsibilities

  • Proactive leadership and accountability for all procurement activity and management of third party spend within the allocated category (ies).
  • This will include professional responsibility for securing the efficiencies in allocated categories within an agreed timeframe and with agreed targets in place

  • Developing, agreeing with the leadership and managing the execution of the procurement plan and strategy for category (ies) in scope as determined by the procurement leadership team.
  • This detailed category plan and strategy will also include a supplier management plan and strategy as appropriate for the category (ies) in scope.

    The category(ies) plan / strategy should be developed in discussion and collaboration with relevant business stakeholders to ensure full buy in before final sign off.

  • Acting as RSA’s procurement expert in respect of the category(ies) the postholder is responsible for
  • Providing guidance , direction and strategic advice relating to procurement planning and execution for relevant category (ies) to stakehoders at all levels across RSA UK
  • Developing a savings measurement and tracking methodology specific to the category (ies) in scope and ensuring ongoing management and reporting of the same to deliver target efficiencies
  • Leading and executing Procurement Projects related to the relevant category (ies) of spend and being responsible for both making and influencing strategic and commercial decisions of major significance to RSA’s finances and delivery of services
  • Management of all resources relating to projects for which the postholder is responsible at any given time, including staff management within procurement and business and / or service departments, insofar as they are allocated to the projects concerned
  • Communication and management of relationship with external suppliers and partners at the relevant seniority levels (typically at Director or senior management level), both during procurement processes and during the service delivery phase ( including planning and execution of supplier management strategy).

  • Deep experience within procurement and category management (including SRM) in RSA or external equivalent
  • Experience of dealing with major stakeholders and strategically important suppliers
  • Previous role involving management of teams within RSA or external equivalent
