We are a multidisciplinary group of consultants working alongside engineering, design, planning and digital specialists throughout project lifecycles from to feasibility, design and assessment, to construction and implementation.

We work in a range of sectors with public and private sector clients with a focus on cities, energy, water and transport.

We have an exciting 12 Month Fixed Term opportunity for an experienced Senior Environmental Consultant to support an exciting and diverse portfolio of projects within the built environment.


The role requires strong content knowledge in the field of Environmental Impact Assessment, together with excellent project co-ordination, report writing and communication skills.

You will be working in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside other environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists, and will apply strong interpersonal skills to develop relationships with others.

Clients will include private developers and other organisations and public sector authorities. Responsibilities includes leadership of Environmental Impact Assessments and climate assessment to high professional standards in line with our IEMA Quality Mark accreditation and Arup quality assurance standards.

You will have first-hand experience of leading teams to deliver positive environmental outcomes on major infrastructure projects and strong regulatory knowledge.

Your role will include environmental assessment and reporting, engaging with design teams around mitigation as well as opportunities to get involved with wider more strategic sustainability advice e.

g. design and construction assurance, etc.

An appreciation of the updated EIA Regulations and assessment experience across a broad spectrum of environmental disciplines is desirable.

Your role will include :

  • Leadership of multi-disciplinary environmental impact assessment
  • Preparing and delivering IEMA Quality Mark Compliant Environmental Impact Assessments
  • Advising and influencing project stakeholders in comprehensive recommendations for environmental mitigation and enhancement
  • Leading and delivering specialist environmental climate assessment chapters.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations and / or training to client teams and stakeholders
  • Active participation in knowledge and skills networks within Arup and the wider professional community.
  • Contributing to the corporate sustainability of Arup as a firm.
  • Requirements and skills

    Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s university degree in a relevant environmental or sustainability related discipline.
  • Experience and track record in Environmental Impact Assessment and climate assessment
  • Experience and track record of planning and managing project team deliverables within set timeframe and budget.
  • Experience working in a relevant field of consulting.
  • Demonstrable track record of project leadership and influence in line with sustainability principles.
  • Experience of major programme management or working within an engineering environment
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary environmental project teams
  • Project and commercial management experience, including project planning and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of current UK and international environment and sustainability policy and legislation
  • Candidates should be chartered in a relevant professional institution e.g. IEMA
  • Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience and track record in assessment of major accidents and disasters, environmental enhancement and mitigation, environmental resilience.
  • Experience of preparing commercial bids / bid responses, winning work etc.
  • Experience in a client-facing role
  • Experience of programme and commercial leadership
  • Experience in delivery of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects
