From the Headmaster

Barnard Castle School is seeking an outstanding individual to be a Teacher of French and German for our thriving day and boarding school, which has remained at the forefront of girls’ and boys’ education for over 130 years.

Whilst the school retains a strong academic record, its focus continues to be on developing life skills and nurturing each individual character.

This is something that as a school, we take great care and pride in.

Modern Foreign Languages is a key department in the school, with the vast majority of our pupils in Years 10 and 11 studying for a GCSE in French, German or Spanish.

Pupils study a core of French lessons through Years 7 to 9, experience taster lessons in German and Spanish in Year 7 and then continue with one of these languages in Years 8 and 9.

This role could be suited to newly-qualified teachers and more experienced practitioners alike. A willingness to contribute to our extra-curricular programme might be advantageous.

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for one year.

Barney is an exciting and hugely rewarding place to be, and I look forward to receiving your application.

French and German at Barney

All pupils study French in Years 7 to 9 and the vast majority add Spanish or German as separate lessons in Year 8 and 9.

Modern Languages are core subjects in our GCSE programme and all pupils are expected to take at least one to GCSE level.

We offer all three languages as A Level options in the Sixth Form and candidates follow the AQA GCSE and A Level specifications.

Most Languages teaching takes place in a modern classroom block which is shared with the English Department. The Modern Foreign Languages department comprises four staff in addition to the Head of Department, including one House Parent as well as the current Deputy Head (Pastoral).

Colleagues are encouraged to contribute to extra-curricular language activities.

More information about the role can be found in the job description and person specification.

If you feel that you can meet the above requirements then please submit a letter of application along with the Barnard Castle School application form to the Headmaster.

Only applications containing the requested information will be considered.

Closing date : 5pm, Monday 1st June 2020

Interviews : Week commencing Monday 8th June 2020
