To design, engineer & deliver, from concept to series-development, programme specific ESS cooling systems, ensuring they fulfil all the programme requirements (cost, timing, performance / function / attributes).

Key Responsibilities :

  • Detailed ESS cooling system knowledge and experience programme specific ESS attribute delivery / support, managing design releases, specifications, DVPs, DFMEAs, BCR (QCRs)
  • ESS cooling system ownership and delivery
  • ESS cooling system assembly planning and allocation
  • ESS cooling system analysis (where required)
  • ESS cooling system supplier management
  • Design-focused vehicle level meetings for ESS cooling system integration
  • Principal Accountabilities :

  • Guarantee ESS cooling system delivery to vehicle projects to specification, on time, on budget.
  • Understand and support the package constraints for the ESS. Work with ESS suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure programme-specific ESS meets technical and package targets.
  • Deliver detailed designs on time to defined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements

  • Support links with external organisations such as universities, research organisations, etc. on collaborative research projects that will help McLaren deliver innovation in ESS cooling system technologies where appropriate.
  • This would include research projects with universities or other like-minded organisations collaborating with the Engineering Manager / Principal Engineer of ESS and Head of Electric Drive Technology (EDT) to exploit such opportunities.

  • Work within, and influence, the Vehicle Programme & Engineering Management teams to guarantee that the EDT department responsibilities collectively deliver the whole vehicle specification targets.
  • Work with the other systems engineers and designers and the ESS supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs.
  • Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in thermal, NVH, durability, & performance attributes (power, emissions, and response).
  • Ensure the ESS cooling system interfaces seamlessly to the vehicle cooling systems.
  • Work with Supply Chain Management to ensure delivery of the ESS on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build.
  • Prepare and present material to support external and internal project status reviews
  • Provide support on ESS technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of hybrid system attributes.
  • Guarantee ESS cooling system ownership and delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including :
  • Component Specification which specifies integration requirements for the ESS cooling system with other ESS and Hybrid Electrical System (HES) components.
  • Electric Drive System FMEA, ESS cooling system FMEA; System and ESS cooling system DVP; Support Vehicle / Electric Drive System test specifications
  • Support management of ESS development budgets & expenditure
  • ESS cooling system planning, timing & delivery including design, release & change-requests in line with ETRS requirements, development and validation plans
  • ESS cooling system BOM management & tracking
  • Robust concerns resolution
  • Vehicle build & development support
  • Delivery of ESS cooling system for all projects in line with McLaren Development Process (MDP) and that Project Management KPIs are on track
  • Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Technical knowledge & experience of ESS cooling system design, test & production delivery
  • Ability to define requirements and conduct analysis for cooling systems and components, including pumps, heat exchangers, pipes & hoses, expansion / header tanks, cooling fluids.
  • Knowledge of heat generation and heat flow paths in electrochemical cells, electrical conductors and other current-carrying ESS components.
  • Ability to support ESS mechanical design, GD&T, packaging & release
  • Understanding of Li-Ion technologies, BMS, Functional Safety and High Voltage Switchgear
  • Support of cell, module and pack testing to facilitate data gathering and analysis
  • Support of testing with HiL (Hardware in the Loop) and Rig systems to prove integration quality
  • Experience of executing ESS cooling system DVPs, FMEA and DFM plans
  • PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
  • Experienced in OEM or Tier-one component delivery
  • Qualifications and Training

    Mechanical, Electrical / Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2 : 1 or above

    Personal Attributes :

  • Good team skills, willingness to work cross-functionally with excellent communication skills.
  • 2-5 years automotive design and development experience
  • Experience of high-volume and niche-volume vehicle programmes
  • An ability to deliver under pressure with an appetite for measured success.
