Job Description

Reporting directly to the VP Business Development she / he will define, develop and execute business development and licensing transactions that contribute to Mallinckrodt’s overall strategic growth targets and enable the company to continue along its path of strong, sustainable growth.

The role will involve identifying new growth opportunities through external business development activities that will include licensing and M&A.

The role may also lead business divestiture activity and will have a high amount of input to the business strategy.

The position has no direct reports but will provide cross-functional leadership to teams assembled from around the company.

As Mallinckrodt operates out of 2-3 hubs, it is also important to be able to work internationally and across time zones.

It is a fast paced organization so anyone who is a self-starter and able to adapt to changing circumstances will do well.


The role is an end-to-end business development role starting from lead identification and generation, screening of targets and the development of full business cases for selected targets, leading of due-

diligence teams, sometimes acting as deal champion, to leading the negotiation and integration teams, and closing the deal.

The primary objective of this role will be to identify and evaluate products or companies for merger and / or acquisition for areas of unmet needs, in-

license drugs and technologies that fit with the company’s strategy and prepare and present analyses of these opportunities to the Board.

Key responsibilities of the role will include :

  • Working closely with the executive leadership to identify and execute M&A and licensing opportunities that support the company’s growth strategy.
  • Conducting the approaches to potential targets and establishing and building on relationships as appropriate.
  • Ensure that comprehensive due diligence is completed on compounds / organizations that are of potential interest.
  • Assist with of negotiation activity and oversight of the compilation of potential deal terms.
  • Presentation of potential deals to the executive leadership.
  • Overseeing of Confidential Disclosure Agreements and confidential presentations by potential partners.
  • Ensure that the company has knowledge of changes in technology, the marketplace and other factors that may influence business development and attainment of company strategy.
  • Establish mutually respectful relationships across the organization internally and externally with key leaders in the pharmaceuticals space.
  • Be seen as a credible addition to the organization and as an asset to the senior leadership team.
  • Be regarded as very well networked in the business development space in the generics and specialty pharma industry and able to open doors.
  • Gain a clear understanding of the organization’s strategy for growth and contribute to the formulation of such strategies.
  • Identify, lead and conduct authorized deals as well as look for key assets across established pharmaceutical competitors.
  • Displayed a high degree of confidence and gravitas to work in a highly visible role, ability to operate at the most senior levels of any organization with a high degree of accountability and responsibility.
  • Work seamlessly with the internal teams in portfolio management, product development, IP, regulatory and commercial.
  • Live the values of Mallinckrodt, possessing a strong work ethic but with a business edge and high degree of energy and strong ethics.

    This is a critical role in a highly focused and developing company. As such, the appointed candidate will be deemed to be successful upon completion of the following objectives in their first year :

  • Have developed a pipeline of deal ideas to be able to deliver 3-5 deals per year for the next 5 years in line with the company’s growth targets.
  • During the first year have delivered 2-3 deals
  • Developed strong working relationships across the multi-functional teams involved in BD&L activities in particular members of the Chief Science Officer’s team, peers and colleagues in Strategy and external consultants.

  • Extensive experience in Business Development, M&A and Licensing activities including experience in the life sciences space from specialty pharmaceuticals, drug delivery or generics to big pharma, or strategic consulting.
  • He / she must be able to demonstrate a successful deal sheet where he / she has personally led significant deals, in M&A, in-
  • licensing and joint-ventures, to conclusion with transformation impact for the organization.

  • He / she should be well networked in the branded pharmaceutical space, consulting and investment community and be able to leverage existing relationships.
  • He / she should be able to contribute to overall business strategy.
  • Can demonstrate leadership of multi-functional teams; have worked in a matrix environment in a sizeable organization. Capable of working autonomously and demonstrating a significant impact on the organization.
  • Champion ideas and support others to achieve goals. It is essential that the appointed candidate appreciates the need to plan but also to deliver on goals and meet objectives.

    An undergraduate degree in the natural sciences; a Graduate Degree (MD, PhD, MS and MBA or JD) is preferred.
