Job Purpose

Following the retirement of its founding Chair, CENSIS is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to lead its governing Board.

The Board is responsible for the maintenance and ongoing renewal of the Centre’s long term strategy, oversees the executive’s delivery of that strategy.

monitors the Centre’s performance on behalf of its stakeholders and gives advice to the CEO and executive team. In its first phase of operation CENSIS has established an international reputation for leading, accelerating and incubating industrial innovation in the technology and application of advanced sensors and imaging systems.

In particular, it has developed unique strengths in facilitiating application and deployment of Internet of Things’ (IoT) technology which is expected to underpin the fourth industrial revolution.

CENSIS is an industry-facing organisation and as such is industry-led. Most members of the governing board are experienced industrialists and the new Chair is expected to have a successful private sector track record in a leadership position.

She / he will be a prominent advocate for CENSIS in its support of advanced innovation, raising the profile of its brand and influencing both government and industry.

Applicants will have a track record of making an impact in boardroom environments. They will understand the roles of R&D, collaboration, innovation and commercialisation and will be highly skilled communicators, practiced in influencing at the highest levels.

CENSIS is administered by the University of Glasgow and the appointment process will be subject to the University’s policies and procedures, particularly in regard to equality, diversity and transparency .

A small honorarium (£10k pa) plus related expenses will be paid to the successful candidate.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Lead the governing board, ensuring that it holds the executive team to account for the delivery of the Centre’s business plan, sustains a visionary strategy and develops creative initiatives to strengthen CENSIS’s reputation as a key member of Scotland’s innovation system.

The Board normally meets four times per year with ad-hoc working groups tackling specific tasks in the interim.2. Give regular guidance and challenge in meetings with the Chief Executive to ensure that the strategy is delivered and the reputation continues to grow.

3. Develop and maintain strong and effective relationships,with key stakeholders in government, funding agencies, industry and academia4.

Ensure the effectiveness of the governing board and of its meetings. Refresh its membership as necessary with due regard to its breadth of expertise, the principles of good governance and best practice in equality and diversity.

5. Promote CENSIS at key events, including the annual Technology Summit. 6. Conduct the Chief Executive’s performance and development review.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge / Qualifications EssentialA1 A strong track record of successful leadership at senior level in an industrial or other professional capacityA2 Experience and / or understanding of the role of innovation centres in supporting economic growth.

Desirable B1 A sound knowledge of and expertise in the sensor and imaging systems or other relevant industry and / or an understanding of the future opportunities afforded by Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

C2 Ability to lead meetings of talented opinion-formers to achieve effective conclusions. Job Features

DimensionsThe CENSIS Board has a membership of 12 (including the CEO) plus 4 observers from the funders and theadministrative university.

The Board normally receives presentations from 4 members of the Executive Team who also participate in discussions. CENSIS has a five year budget of £10M including £3M to be generated from third party income.

It has a complement of 18 staff based in the INOVO building, George Street, Glasgow. CENSIS supports industrial innovation in sensor and imaging systems using a variety of mechanisms including : collaborative R&D between industry and academia : direct support for projects and product innovation using its in-

house engineering team : outreach and advocacy for sensors and imaging technologies : demonstrator projects to showcase opportunities.

In its first phase of operation CENSIS completed a total of 138 projects with industry worth a total of £17.3M having an expected impact of £129M on the economy.

Planning and OrganisationApart from attending and leading regular timetabled Board meetings (4 per year) the Chair is free to deliver the remit as necessary and appropriate.

Internal / External RelationshipsLiaise on a regular basis with the CEO and with external stakeholders as appropriate.Build rapport with members of the Board to maximise effectiveness.

Conduct CEO annual performance review Decision MakingIt is the Chair's responsibility to ensure that her / his decisions and those of the Board are made in accordance with governance procedures laid down by the funders and the administering university.

Problem SolvingThe Chair is expected to use her / his expertise and experience to assist the Executive Team to meet the challenges encounted by the organisation.
