About the Role

An opportunity has arisen to join our Finance team as a Head of Commercial Finance here at Matalan. You will work closely with senior management across the business, driving optimal business outcomes through highly effective decision support and influence.

This high profile position gives immediate Board exposure and previous experience of working at this level is required.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide critical insight to the business through first class analysis and interpretation of commercial and financial information.

You will also provide proactive commercial advice to enable the business to make robust commercial and strategic decisions to improve business profitability and working capital efficiency.

  • You will encourage a culture whereby business performance and processes are understood and challenged on an end to end basis and improvements and creative solutions are continually driven adopting a business partnering mind-set and approach
  • Responsible for a team of four, comprising one Senior Commercial Finance Manager, one Commercial Finance Manager and two Analysts
  • Ensure that the Commercial Finance Team supports and challenges Trading, Marketing, Retail and Online in all aspects of their performance and drives out action plans to address issues
  • Devise short term plans to address immediate issues, influencing courses of action and ultimately supporting the business’s strategy
  • Ensure that the Commercial Finance team is identifying and highlighting courses of action that may be detrimental to the business and assisting stakeholders in options development, assessment and implementation
  • Commercially drive the development and review of all business trials and initiatives in robustly assessing return on investment and impacts on key performance indicators
  • Play a key role in the governance framework within the business ensuring that stock commitment, buy mix and inbound phasing and product lifecycles are managed effectively and within the plans approved by the Board
  • Review and discuss weekly trading, trends and KPI’s with other senior stakeholders, agreeing required actions and making recommendations to the Board where appropriate
  • Participation in the pre-season planning process to prepare and agree 18 month trade plans for presentation to the Board and subsequent framework within which the business will operate
  • Work with senior stakeholders across the business to subsequently drive consistency of planning, implementation and reporting against the agreed framework
  • Responsible for ensuring that all commercial decisions involving your team are reviewed appropriately and consistently.
  • This should ensure that all decisions that are made maximise the long term profitability of the business

  • An active member of the senior management team within Finance, assisting the CFO in continuously improving the quality of financial performance across the business
  • About You

  • Strong academic calibre and educated to degree level with a professional Finance qualification (ACA / CIMA / ACCA)
  • Strong leadership skills are a prerequisite for this role with the ability to engage multiple stakeholders at all levels of the business in addition to leading a high performing team of finance professionals
  • Commercial retail finance experience at a senior level
  • First class analytical skills and ability to create real business insight and impact
  • Proven track record of building and developing high performing teams of Finance professionals
  • Strong communication and listening skills are key to this role as you will be expected to liaise cross-functionally and amongst varying levels of management.
