Assistant Residential Tutor - Carrington College



Note : This is an operational position, not an academic position.

Our College

Carrington College is a residential college owned and operated by the University of Otago. It was officially opened in February 1945 as the very first co-

educational student residence in Australasia. As it has evolved, new buildings have been added and named after notable Dunedinites.

We now cater for 241 residents of whom about 225 are first year full-time students.

The Role

The Assistant Residential Tutor is responsible to the Senior Tutor and Head of College for the effective and efficient provision of a collegiate experience for its residents and wider associated community.

Core to this is assistance with the oversight of academic, collegiate and student experience support.

This includes :

  • providing opportunities for residents to experience cultural, sporting, academic and personal development;
  • assisting with the management of the residential operation of the College;
  • assisting with the co-ordinating and development of the College?s academic, pastoral care and events programmes;
  • providing academic and pastoral advise and mentoring to a specified group of College residents as assigned by the Senior Tutor; and
  • contributing to maintaining the reputation of the College as a place of academic excellence.
  • During periods of non-occupancy by residents at the College, the Assistant Residential Tutor will assist with the promotion of College facilities and contribute to operations within the wider Division.

    Skills and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications.
  • Experience in working with young adults in a leadership capacity.
  • Proven ability to perform effectively and professionally in a complex and challenging environment.
  • Previous experience in the area of pastoral care, conflict resolution, team building, communication and community development.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote academic accomplishment whilst providing leadership, pastoral support and a safe environment.
  • Experience in a similar role would be a distinct advantage.

    Further Details

    This is a live-in position and as such you will be required to live onsite in accommodation provided by the University. The total remuneration package for this position will recompense you for all accommodation costs.

    This is a permanent full-time role. Hours of work will be in the afternoon / evening, with weekend work being part of the roster.

    Two consecutive days off are provided within each 7-day period (outside of weekends).
