About Us :

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. Through combining world-

class facilities with major international collaborations and some of the world’s most talented staff, we’re driving ground-

breaking advances in science and technology.

STFC is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); a new entity that brings together seven partner Research Councils, Innovate UK and Research England to create an independent organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-

leading position in research and innovation.

STFC’s Particle Physics Department (PPD) participates in and supports the UK particle physics experimental programme, providing capabilities that complement and go beyond what can be achieved in universities alone.

About The Role :

We now have a prestigious opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead the STFC Particle Physics Department, based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

As Director you will provide visible and inspiring leadership to deliver STFC’s corporate vision, collaborating closely with colleagues in our Programmes and Facilities Directorates and the national and international particle physics community.

You will be responsible for the leadership of a department of around 75 staff, including those based at RAL, CERN and our underground laboratory at the Boulby Mine.

You will have direct line management of senior staff. As well as demonstrating sound financial, safety and risk management, you will be responsible for managing the department’s annual funding of £5M.

The preference is for a full-time appointment, but a joint appointment will be considered. STFC operates a flexible working hours policy.

You will develop and execute the PPD strategy to support and deliver the STFC programme for UK Particle Physics (UK-PP).

Specific responsibilities will include :

  • representing STFC on international bodies and committees and fostering co-operation through developing relationships at international laboratories
  • designing, building and executing world-leading experiments
  • performing world-leading and high profile research in particle physics detectors and accelerators and in computing
  • leading PPD’s contribution to the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN
  • working with the Strategy, Planning and Communications Directorate to strengthen strategic partnerships worldwide
  • developing the research capabilities of the UK particle physics community through dissemination of knowledge and technology and working extensively with communities worldwide, particularly university based UK-PP groups
  • investigating new sources of funding for the department
  • liaising with university-based UK-PP groups
  • ensuring that all objectives and outputs of the Particle Physics Department makes a tangible contribution to STFC’s strategic themes that underpin our activities
  • working in close collaboration with STFC colleagues to achieve corporate goals
  • championing the principles of equality and diversity, ensuring they are integrated into all aspects of our business
  • demonstrating and modelling personal commitment to STFC and UKRI vision, values and strategic objectives, promoting our achievements at every opportunity and in appropriate arenas
  • promoting the public interest in and understanding of science
  • ensuring that STFC Particle Physics Department maintains its role as a world leader in particle physics.
  • UK and overseas travel will be required.
