In a nutshell

This role has responsibility for showing the business how it is performing in terms of financial, market, and customer performance and explaining why this is the case.

It works with senior stakeholders across the business at Ops Board and DD level to decode and interpret performance data.

Specifically, this role will work with members of the Food Board, FCLT and RLT to diagnose, explain and unpick our business performance in the context of the market and our competitive environment, drawing from a range of financial, customer satisfaction and other sources.

To be successful, you will create, collate and compile complex and varied sources of data and research in order to get to an answer for the business.

The role also has responsibility for the operation of our customer feedback programme, and uses it as a key input to diagnosing business performance.

What you need to do

This role will sit on the Insight Leadership Team and in that capacity is one of a group of C6 roles that support the Head of Insight in leading the Insight team for Sainsbury’s.

This role will lead a team to combine our existing tools and sources of data with additional quantitative and qualitative primary research to bring a customer perspective to key business decisions.

Specifically, the Business Performance Senior Insight Manager role will focus on :

Unpicking business performance in the context of the market and competitive environment, working closely with finance and price & promotions to lead discussions with senior stakeholders in forums such as Food Board and Pulse

Scanning for future trends that will impact the business, market environment and our competitors and sharing these with the business

Owning the relationships with key market data partners, such as Nielsen, Kantar and Cardlytics

Owning the way we collect customer satisfaction and other feedback data from across the estate (specifically, the Lettuce Know’ programme), and how we play this back to the wider business.

Owning the provision of self-service customer data into the business

What you need to know

  • This role is key in shaping the understanding of our performance and the actions we should take, from a customer perspective so you need to : -
  • Influence at a senior level across the business
  • Think strategically, working in a hypothesis-led way to break down complex problems and land the answer with the business
  • Understand, challenge and analyse data, whilst stepping back to bring clarity to decisions
  • Understand how to bring together varied sources of first and third party data, working closely with a variety of agencies
  • Lead and coach your team to do this
  • Specifically, for the Business Performance role, you need to understand the drivers of our performance (both financial & customer), how they interlink and the key business decisions that can impact them.

    There are many ways to have acquired these skills and this knowledge, so there are no specific qualifications or similar proof points required.

    However, relevant and demonstrable experience is of course essential, so it is likely that successful candidates will have already done roles involving data or research, as well as have experience of leading diverse teams and building relationships with senior stakeholders.

    You own the suite of tools and agencies that help us gain an in depth understanding of our performance, our customers and the market we operate in.

    You help set and frame the narrative for performance that helps guide strategic and tactical decisions across the business
