Job Purpose and Summary

Responsible for the overall IP administration function, and managing a team of IP administrators.

The IP Group in Canon Europe has 24 staff. The patent attorney teams have 11 patent attorneys in total and handle the filing and prosecution of hundreds of patent cases per year.

Another team of 4 IP professionals handles anti-counterfeit, trademark and contract matters. We also have 2 Japanese staff from our parent company, Canon Inc.

The IP administration team has a manager and 4 staff. It supports all the administration needs of the group. One of the key responsibilities is due date management with so many active cases under our care.

Billing is another key responsibility, since the IP Group earns income from other group companies. You will be part of the IP Group management team made up of the Head of IP, one IP director and 4 managers.

In this exciting role you will :

Ensure delivery of highly-accurate, timely, flexible and cost-efficient patent administration services to Canon Inc. and other supported companies including patent filing, prosecution, validation and annuity and other official fee payment services, and also including trademarks, designs and other forms of IP protection.

Manage the performance of your direct reports so that each of them is fully productive and carries out his / her work in a highly-

accurate, timely, flexible and cost-efficient way.

Support the attorney teams to enable each team to meet its agreed targets agreed with the Director.

In co-operation with the management team, ensure the availability, reliability and development of necessary IT systems including case management, electronic filing, document exchange, time recordal, invoicing and document management systems.

  • Promote effective communication and mutual understanding between team members and Canon Inc. patent administration staff and managers;
  • and assisting the management team to manage the relationships with patent offices, outside patent firms and other suppliers of patent-

    related services to CEL and / or Canon Inc.

    Respond to requests for advice and other queries from Canon Inc. and other supported companies on IP administration issues.

    Perform your share of case work.

    In order to succeed in this role, you bring to the table :

  • Minimum CIPA qualified patent administrator and extensive IP administration experience;
  • Extensive knowledge of using and designing case management and billing systems (we use CPA Memotech);
  • Fluent English;
  • Specific knowledge / experience areas (preferred) :

    Previous experience (>

  • 1 yr) preferred in a manager role in an in-house patent / IP / legal department, patent attorney firm, IP solicitor firm or equivalent;
  • People management skills, with proven track record in direct line management including recruitment, performance management, mentoring and development planning;
  • Experience of complex matters (oppositions, appeals, disputes, litigation, licensing, advisory matters);
  • Four to eight years of relevant working experience in an international company;
  • Strong IT skills, including MS Excel and Word and Adobe Acrobat;
  • Knowledge of SQL;
  • Project management skills.
