Tooling Engineer (Forming)

  • When our founder Bruce McLaren passed away at the age of 32 he left behind a legacy that has shaped who we are today. We have an unrivalled heritage which has its roots in racing;

    For the next 6 years as part of McLaren’s Track 22 plan, we are looking to invest £1 billion into Research and Development, leading to the launch of 15 all-

    new cars or derivatives during this period. To achieve this plan £50 million has been invested in the state of the art McLaren Composites Technology Centre based in Sheffield, responsible for the manufacture of the carbon fibre monocell which is at the centre of all McLarens.

    An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven individual to join our Preforming team as a Project Engineer within our Composites Technology Centre in Sheffield (UK).

    Purpose of the role :

    In this capacity, your role and responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following :

  • Development of preforming (forming of advanced carbon fibre textile materials) tooling for dry fibre carbon composites components.
  • To understand to a high level, how the forming process operates from the tooling perspective and to understand the effects of tooling changes.

  • Support the development of associated capabilities (People, Tooling, Machinery, Materials, Process development, quality, cost, productivity, supply chain).
  • Coordinate the work of suppliers and delivery of tooling from external development partners and suppliers.
  • Revision control and continual improvement of tooling to ensure the preforming process is as efficient as possible always.
  • The scope of this role encompasses all projects from R&D all way through to serial production.
  • Principal accountabilities :

  • Deliver all aspects of preforming tooling in line with targets, KPI’s and milestones set by the Principal Engineer.
  • Coordinate the work of external tooling suppliers and designers
  • Contain QCRs (Quality Concern Reports) within 24 hours. Solve / Close QCRs in line with McLaren PPS (Practical Problem Solving) system including a robust understanding and dissemination of lesson learnt that are aimed at avoiding problem repetition and continuous improvement
  • Deliver continuous improvement to reduce cost and improve quality and productivity in series production.
  • Deliver Technical Specifications for all systems (parts, tooling, machinery, materials) you are responsible for and in line with McLaren and VCA standards.
  • To provide design and engineering output to produce new models and support R&D new product development programs
  • To apply analytical skills and judgement to generate solutions to technical challenges
  • To prioritise and manage complex equipment procurement, projects, within established timelines
  • To apply design or process excellence tools towards accomplishment of assigned goals.
  • To develop innovative initiatives and design methodology to improve business performance
  • To ensure procedures, specifications, and SOPs produced comply with the company’s quality standards and are maintained ready for audits.
  • Responsible for their own and others health and Safety, and should report any unsafe condition as soon as possible so that preventative or corrective action can be taken.
  • To ensure EH&S risk assessments produced comply with the company’s Health & Safety standards and are maintained ready for audits.
  • Adopts a creative & thoughtful approach to engineering problem solving, (e.g. 8D or PPS) with good attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of quality systems, regulatory requirements and related standards with demonstrated understanding of the practical application of these requirements
  • Supporting delivery of products to meet budgets & expenditure, timing & delivery
  • Tooling CAD data management & tracking
  • Supplier liaison & management
  • Experience in change management systems
  • Knowledge, skills & experience :

    Required

  • A Tooling Design engineer with ability in coordinating the work and delivery of others.
  • Experienced in a composites manufacturer with a high level of Composites tooling technical knowledge in advanced composites.
  • Experienced user of formal problem-solving methodologies
  • experience in composites tool design
  • experience with 3D systems, preferably Catia V5. Able to demonstrate ability to work with surface design as well as solid models.
  • Able to show a history of using process understanding to improve and develop tooling design and function.
  • Preferred

  • Demonstrate good experience in DFMEA, and PFMEA
  • Relevant Experience in Lightweight Body Design and materials technology
  • Sound commercial and financial awareness.
  • Experience in the use of 3D scanning software and the manipulation / post processing of point cloud data.
  • Knowledge of PPS problem solving methodology
