We have an exciting opportunity for an Operational Safety Manager based at our Walworth Depot, with the flexibility to regularly travel to other locations both inside and outside the business.

The ideal candidate will proactively engage with our employees to improve driving standards and significantly reduce avoidable collisions and injuries across our network.

They will ensure the Three Sees are fully embedded and actively used by all across the business. In addition the ideal candidate will bring a fresh pair of eyes and challenge current thinking and approach to driving standards and operational safety.

Duties include :

  • Driving a significant reduction in road traffic collision rates and numbers of people injured on our services.
  • Embedding defensive behaviours in the driver workforce to minimise incidents of verbal or physical assault.
  • Seek excellence in DQM scores while reducing the number of poor reports received.
  • Being the key operational safety lead for Abellio with Transport for London (TfL).
  • Proactively engage with drivers in depots, on the road and at bus stands by talking to them, closing issues and embedding The Three Sees defensive driving strategy.
  • Observe driving standards in real time and provide real time positive / constructive feedback.
  • Organise depot roadshows and on-stand discussions with targeted messaging for that depot / route(s).
  • Assist the operations teams with very serious incidents and provide investigative assistance.
  • Be the Abellio lead on safety innovation trials and any telematics systems.
  • Be the lead contact for CIRAS and responder to confidential reports.
  • Take responsibility for the on-bus CCTV team and ensure effective links between them and the Metropolitan Police.
  • Ensure most cost effective ways of working with the depot operations teams are also efficient to reduce delays in obtaining CCTV footage.
  • Take the lead on creating a valid driver risk rating approach based on leading indicators as well as actual incidents.
  • Ensure best practice and all relevant information is shared between sites.
  • Review the approach to driver training to ensure content, delivery and frequency are appropriate for our needs.
  • Collate and distribute trend analyses to depot teams and drivers so they fully understand the issues and then create targeted campaigns to improve those areas thus driving safety performance and culture.
  • Ensure full compliance to Abellio’s Health & Safety policies.
  • The Candidate :

  • Experience of communication, listening and adaptability to a diverse group of people is essential.
  • Self-motivated, dynamic and a practical worker with experience of working to tight deadlines is essential.
  • Able to work at all our depots in the South and West of London and travel out on the road on our bus services is essential.
  • IOSH qualification is desirable.
  • Experience of conducting investigative interviews, preparing casework and hearing cases is desirable.
  • Previous experience of reducing incident rates and improving safety culture is desirable.
