A recent operational review of the UKbuildings business identified the need to provide greater continuity andconsistency in the way core disciplines operate and execute our projects.

The heads of each of the disciplines in theregional offices are responsible for the implementation of processes andinitiatives that are highlighted and owned by the UK Technical Leads.

At a project level and as we movetowards delivering large and complex multi-disciplinary projects, the technicalmanagement and leadership of our core disciplines is paramount.

Our Northern Studiowill require an inspirational structural engineering leader to guide, inspireand grow the local discipline teams and support the UK Technical Lead in thedevelopment of the National and European capability.

The Head of Discipline is also expected toact as a risk mitigation during the bid and delivery stage of projects.

The role will be based in our Manchester office.

Function andScope

The Head of Building Structures North will bereport to the Regional Director for the Northern Studio, and liaising closelywith the UK Technical Lead, playing a key role in driving the technicalcapability of the regional, national and European teams.

The role will provide a client facingstructural lead for the region and ensure that Jacobs maintains the highesttechnical standards, client service and levels of quality.

Line management of discipline Team Principals is akey function of the role, ensuring that team leaders are empowered andaccountable for the performance of their team and regional discipline, whilstat the same time encouraged to be bold in exploring new areas of technicalcapability and previously untested clients and sectors.

Scalable and sustainable growth, in both headcountand capability are key measures of the success of a Head of Discipline.

Main Responsibilities

As a key member of the regionalleadership team, a Head of Disciplinewill collaborate with UK Technical Leadsto develop best practice both in discipline and across our multi-

disciplinaryteam, nurturing a culture of technical excellence and continuous professionaldevelopment. The candidate will also be responsible for :

  • The technical direction of the Regional discipline in conjunction withthe UK Technical lead;
  • Raising the profile of JacobsBuildings team within the industry, taking part in panel reviews, regionalcompetitions and press
  • Managing client relationships andcontributing to business development
  • Supporting the UK Technical Lead inthe development and management of UK Building project technical assurance processes
  • Ensuringtechnical quality through implementation of best practice and continuousimprovement processes
  • Leading the recruitment of keytechnical resources in collaboration with the UK Technical Lead
  • Providing technical leadership onbids and opportunities
  • Be accountable for technicalperformance, quality and budget control on all projects within the region / teamand have a hands on approach to resolving internal or external challenges
  • Communicationsand Working Relationships

    The Head of BuildingStructures North is a member of the Buildings Regional Leadership Team and willwork closely with other members of that team, including the Regional Director, UKTechnical Leads, Project Management.

    Externally you will workclosely with external organisations and with our clients through all stages ofour relationship with them.


  • A strong technical background in structural design, construction and procurement;
  • Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant professional body or equivalent level of experience;
  • Experience in leading building structures teams through all stages of work winning, design and procurement;
  • Experience and understanding of the multi-disciplinary design processes;
  • Ability to nurture excellent relationships with clients, with an ability to generate business, resolve problems and exceed client expectations;
  • Proven ability to represent Jacobs at external meetings and demonstrate value;
  • Sound working knowledge of BIM within a project environment
  • Ability to lead design teams to eliminate health and safety risks inthe design and financial risks during construction;
  • Experiencein the execution of cross continental working.
