About the role & About us

This is an opportunity for qualified social workers to develop professional skills by undertaking Prospective Adoption and Foster Carer Assessments for Cornwall Council.

We are looking to recruit to our pool of sessional social workers to carry out prospective adopter and foster carer assessments.

It is calculated that 40-50 foster carer assessments are required annually to keep up with placement demand and turnover.

We are focusing the recruitment of carers able to offer placements for harder to place children and young people especially teenagers, sibling groups and children needing permanency.

It is calculated that 50 prospective adopter assessments / step parent assessments are required annually to meet the demand.

The role and requirements of the sessional assessing social workers for Fostering and Adoption are as follows :

Fostering :

  • Attend Attachment Style Interview (ASI) training 3 day training (provided by Cornwall Council)
  • Attend Consensus meetings in respect of ASIs.
  • Attend supervision 4 weekly with the Principal Social Worker over the twelve week period of assessment
  • Complete fostering assessment over 12 weeks
  • Ensure a hand over meeting takes place prior to Fostering and Permanence Panel with the identified supervising social worker and fostering mentor.
  • Prepare a professional development plan with the prospective foster carer identifying training and development needs arising from the fostering assessment
  • Prepare potential prospective foster carers for Panel and attend with them and if required support them through any short report or appeal
  • Adoption :

  • Attend ASI training 3 day training and 1 day Consensus training
  • Attend supervision 4 weekly 3 within a 12 week assessment with the Principal Social Worker
  • Attend Consensus meetings in respect of ASI 4 weekly
  • Complete Prospective Adopter Report within 12 weeks and complete assessment to proceed to panel, once shared with potential prospective adopters.
  • Prepare profile of PAs.

  • Prepare potential PAs for Adoption and Permanence Panel, attend with them and if required support them through any short report or appeal
  • Undertake Step Parenting Annex A reports
  • Attend hand over meeting with Principal Social Worker for family finding to take place
  • Support for the assessors will be from the Adoption or Fostering Principal Social Worker / Team Manager who will : -

  • Provide monthly supervision for social workers completing the assessment(s) 4 weekly (minimum of 3) over the 12 week process of the assessment and possible second opinion
  • Work closely with the recruitment team to ensure the timely handover to Stage 2 of the assessment process
  • Quality assure work and undertake a joint visit at the midway review
