Applications are invited for a Consultant in Clinical or Medical Oncology with a specialist interest in Breast and Upper GI.
This is a six month appointment with a potential extension, based at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood, London and Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in Luton.
The post comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs) and an on-call commitment.
This is an excellent opportunity to initiate the redesign of the Breast and Upper GI service at The Luton and Dunstable NHS trust.
Applications are invited for this vacant position. The postholder will also support the successful AOS service at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, along with consultant colleagues.
The post holder will be joining a dynamic team of surgeons and site specific oncologists with a significant national reputation in the field of service development and research.
They will work closely with a Clinical Oncologist specialising in Breast and GI at Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is a stand-alone centre. There are 41 inpatient beds with 2 step-up’ beds. Specialist medical and surgical care is provided by SLAs with Hillingdon, Watford and Harefield Hospitals.
There are a number of dedicated research beds. There is an on-site Hospice (Michael Sobell House) with 16 in-patient beds.
The Cancer Centre currently has 7 Linear accelerators (including 2 TrueBEAM machines capable of delivering rapid arc therapy) and three CT simulators.
It has state of the art brachytherapy equipment with active HDR brachytherapy and seed implant programs including an open bore MRI for radiotherapy planning.
The first Cyberknife facility in the NHS in the UK has been clinical since 2010.
Research opportunities are excellent within the cancer centre and at all peripheral sites.
The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is a highly rated acute hospital with 641 beds across all disciplines and serves a local population of over 400,000 people from Luton and surrounding areas.
The Breast and Upper GI Cancer MDTs are well established and highly motivated and experienced Cancer Nurse Specialists support the consultant Oncologists and Surgeons in the care of the patients.
There is an excellent nurse led chemotherapy unit with an information centre and access to supportive services which has achieved the Macmillan QEM award.
The hospital has achieved excellent results in the National Cancer Patient Survey for the Trust across all tumour sites and was commended for the excellent standard of clinical and supportive care provided to cancer patients and their families.
The Trust has met all the National Cancer Waiting Time Standards for over 5 years.
The Beds and Herts Breast Screening Unit is situated on site and the Cancer Research team actively recruit and support patients on clinical trials.
