About you :

Do you have experience in interpretation of computational chemistry / QSAR outputs and translation of this information to project teams?

Are you proficient in making initial interpretations of complex data, across a database, an appreciation for applicability of chemical structure read-

across and in vivo toxicology data. Do you enjoy working as part of a cross functional team and providing advice to internal stakeholders on human safety?

Do you want to contribute to all phases of product research and development?

The role :

  • Provides expert QSAR and computational toxicology advice and interpretation to Toxicology and Health Science Teams and Crop Protection projects in order to assess the potential toxicity of new and existing Syngenta active ingredient, their metabolites and impurities.
  • Understanding of chemical reactivity in relation to toxicology endpoints
  • Manages and interprets QSAR outputs including specification, conduct, problem solving, reporting and interpretation to provide information for regulatory use or to aid exploratory, development and business decisions.
  • Apply QSAR knowledge from early stage research through to regulatory approaches.
  • Experience in creating and evaluation of QSAR models is highly desirable
  • To be a credible advocate for the use of QSAR in a toxicology context
  • Accountabilities :

  • Has influence on the development of technical strategies, and the planning of appropriate work, via involvement in multi-
  • disciplinary project teams and meetings

  • Delivers and manages data generation using a wide range of in silico computational tools (OECD toolbox, DEREK, Pipeline Pilot, etc.
  • and delivers results along with an expert interpretation of the significance and consequences of those results, to multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Seeks out latest developments in computational toxicology and in consultation with senior technical experts assesses their potential use at both the early stage research and regulatory interface.
  • Gives presentations at internal meetings and within the wider scientific and regulatory community, in order to support the scientific credibility of Syngenta.
  • Success factors :

  • To understand the relevance of QSAR and computational toxicology to Crop Protection Research project decision making and to existing Active Ingredient regulatory outcomes.
  • To gain the confidence of internal partners (THS project leads, Computational Chemistry colleagues in UK and Stein) so that the job-
  • holder is quickly viewed as a credible expert able to apply chemistry knowledge to interpret data

  • To be able to communicate clearly interpreted interim and emerging data to Senior technical experts and to projects
  • Experience & Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in a chemical / biochemical science (e.g. chemistry, toxicology, pharmacy, biochemistry (with focus on organic chemistry), computational science)
  • Likely to have a higher degree (PhD)
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role or with the potential to develop into the position
  • Understanding of chemistry / chemical reactivity
  • Use and interpretation of QSAR, cheminformatics is highly desirable but training can be given
  • Experience in creating and evaluation of QSAR models is highly desirable
  • Experience in interpretation of computational chemistry / QSAR outputs and translation of this to advice to project teams
  • Experience in making initial interpretations of complex data and across a database
  • Appreciation of the purpose and conduct of toxicology studies and the key study endpoints
